Want to Learn Kokanee Fishing

Post by Salmon King » Tue Jun 02, 2015 9:29 am

Good Morning Everyone!

I've been fishing the Saltwater for so long I've forgotten how to fish the lakes and rivers.

I REALLY want to lesrn how to fish Kokes.
I live in Island County and there's no place I know of that's close so after reading the reports it looks like Stevens would be a good place to learn.
My boat for that trip would be either a 10' Livingston or a 12' HiLaker (unless I could get by with my 8' pontoon  )

Anyway...I have a bunch of trout rods and some flies but what do I buy for Kokanee terminal gear?
How do I rig it? Do you guys troll (from reading the reports this sounds like the preferred method), or anchor up and use power bait?
Is there a Kokanee lake closer to me?

Lots of questions...sorry.
Thanks all,
Terry

There is a lot of information here about Kokanee fishing. and all the info about terminal gear is here as well. Looking at reports will help get you going. Most guys do troll, Toni @ wannafishalure is about the only one still fishing and reporting about it. I can't say anything about lakes in your area, I usually fish Lake Chelan. Mainly, what is done is a small dodger going to wedding ring using a down rigger to choose your depth to fish at. Good luck! Kokanee, while smaller than their larger cousins (sockeye salmon) they are just as delicious to eat, and certainly fun to catch.

Lots of info Gregg thanks!
I already use wedding rings for trout so that will be a breeze...just need to pick up a few of those mini-sized dodgers.
I had no idea there was kokes in cavanugh...interesting. I've never fished there but it is much closer.
I've decided I will use my pontoon for trolling kokes. Much easier to handle than even my 10 or 12'ers.
Just need to figure to how to clamp my dr on the frame someplace.
Although I have no doubt I would learn about a 100 things from a guided trip, it is just out of the budget for me.
I cannot remember where we met either...oh well, not important.

Thanks for all the info. I'm sure it will put me on the right track.
Terry

Man...between the 2 of you it's amazing there are any kokes left for the rest of us! LOL...

Gregg thanks for a terrific offer! But like you my time for the remainder of the year is almost all salt.
Summer Kings, Crab, Shrimp, Pinks, Silvers, Winter Crab, Blackmouth.....
Sheesh! I probably should have thought about kokes 3 months ago!!!
Well....there's always next spring!!!
Well...I MIGHT find some time in the next 3 weeks.

Salmon King, you have longer then 3 weeks to catch kokes. Just hit the water and start fishing for them you will learn as you go. Good luck! There are still some fish left in Lake Stevens, we are going to make another trip up there and give it another try. Just get out and fish!

Well I stopped at ghe Outdoor Eporium on Sat. before the gme and picke up some Kokanee gear.
I got 3 flashers (1 pink, 1 green, and 1 silver), a few wedding ring spinners, and a couple of Kokanee Hfimp Fly rigs.
Picked up a few Crappke jigs and some Sockeye stuff too.
$100!
So now I'm ready to go...I was thinking maybe this Saturday depending on what all else the family has planned.
