No bananas here! Superstition is alive and well on my boat.

I wouldn't call it superstition, as there is some science behind the theory. also, I bet you won't find a banana in the lunch box of very many fishing guides out there. Fishing and bananas don't go together in my opinion.

I'm not much on superstition, but I keep the tradition alive and forbid any bananas on my fishing vessel.

Too many years on fishing boats so, just say no to bananas while on board!

The science:
"When Bananas ripen, they release a prevalent amount of ethylene gas. Not only is ethylene gas an anesthetic agent, it also causes other fruits and vegetables to ripen faster. On a long voyage, the presence of bananas on boats could actually ruin the entire food supply, causing the crew to starve.

A fermenting banana also releases methane gas that could potentially kill a member of a crew, if they found themselves below deck without air for an extended period of time.

So if you are booking a fishing trip with a nautical outfitter, be sure to never bring a banana on board or mention the fact that you had some amazing banana bread for breakfast. Also be aware that some charter boats go as far as banning Banana Boat sunscreen and any Banana Republic clothing."

So, it really has nothing to do with the fishing - just keeping the crew alive [flapper] [biggrin]

Does have to do with fishing. If you're fisn'n on my boat no bananas, banana bread, chap-stick, sunscreen, candy or banana super-gel allowed. I know, I'm a PIA but there are other boats or skippers to fish with...

I have better things to worry about in life than banannas on the boat or who eats them.that being said I've had many banannas onboard. I'm still alive and catching fish haha. I believe in skill not superstitions. Don't care about black cats either and have walked under lots of ladders.

My Boat My Rules!!!

I do think your right if you keep the Bananas off the boat we won't have to keel haul you and that saves your life. :pirat:

A lot of folks have never heard of this, But a guy at work inherited a boat and won't change the name since it's bad Luck.
Go Figure. [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

Never heard of any of this although I get the history part about food supplies. I am surprised as I have been around boats all my life and worked on one as a young man, maybe it just didn't stick. I do remember Oranges being a very valuable commodity on ships as they prevented scurvy?

So, what are your boating/fishing superstitions?

Mine:
• I firmly subscribe to the no banana thing.
• I have to fish in a red hat.
• No new rods or reels on board when fishing a derby or tournament.

I believe in none, nadda, neit, nope, no way, not gonna. I refuse to let any old wives tales run my life, I make enough mistakes on my own. [laugh]
