Gel coat and resin....

Post by Jammer19 » Fri Apr 20, 2012 9:43 am

To add a little protection on my small fiberglass boat, do I use resin on the outside of my boat or is there something else I should use? It is a 20 year old boat I am trying to redo.

Always the 64k question. Are you just trying to paint it or add strength? Resin and gelcoat provide no strength.

I am just trying to protect the outside a bit, inside I wanted to add one more layer of fiberglass and stiffin it up a little then paint the inside.

Gel coat is sort of like paint and it's more waterproof than just plain resin. I'f it were me, I'd be more likely to just paint with an epoxy or urethane paint. You'll get a better finish and they're at least as waterproof.

Now for added layers of glass on the inside, the first step is to sand to bare glass with 40 or 60 grit then follow the the resin rule, polyester will sometimes stick to polyester but never to epoxy but epoxy will stick to just about anything. It's a lot easier to work with. I'm not sure what you 're hoping to gain here but there you have it.
