Etec or 4 stroke Yamaha

What would you buy if you were gonna buy new, and why?

I'm looking to get a new motor for my new Phowler Extreme duck boat. Probably gonna do a 60. I'm leaning towards the ETEC, but have had several people suggest considering the Yamaha. Boat will be used year round. In winter, on smaller lakes, the Pend Orielle River, Snake and Columbia, Potholes and Long lake. Can somebody give me a bit more insight as to why these Yamahas seem so popular? I've look all acroos the web tonight and can't seem to figure out why, other than the fact that they are really quiet.

I'm leaning towards the ETEC for a few reasons:
1) I've seen several posts about it starting up easily in any temp weather
2) Better torque (think about carrying a big load of decoys, hunters, dog, guns, spare clothes, propane camp stove, heater etc)
3) Oil is used in combustion, not thrown out upon oil changes
4)less maintenance costs
5) longer warranty from what i understand
6) less moving parts to fail
7) no service for the first three years
8) a local shop with three certified techs, one is a master tech
9) made in the usa

But the Yamaha:
1) is quieter
2) doesnt burn oil

Why rule out other brands such as Honda and Mercury? For a DI 2-stroke why only consider the E-tec? Just curious. [wink]

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the new motors, 2 or 4 stroke. All the manufactures stand behind their products, all of them have great power to weight and none of them smoke. The 2 strokes are all direct injected and oil injected so they're about as clean as it gets. You have to add oil and it's all pricey but it's a boat everything is....

Pick the dealer that's close to you that you can trust and roll with it, don't get stuck on a brand, it's more about the support.

Check the weight differences, it was a factor in my decision. If all the specs and prices are similar, I'd opt for the 2 stroke due to reasons 4, 6 and 9.

Yes, BRP is a Canadian company, however Evinrude is a subsidiary that is located and run out of Wisconsin. The 2 stroke motors they produce are US products through and through.

True. In my opinion....that's more than enough reason in itself to stick with the Evinrude. But I am willing to consider other options, because reliability on big water in the winter is important to me.

Sort of like Honda's are made in the US...... I'll take your word for it although all I could find says assembly, final assembly and QA are in the plant in question. I would guess it's pretty vertically integrated though.

There are several shops with qualified techs for motors other than Evinrude so I don't quite understand why you would rule out other choices. [confused]

I have a 4 stroke 2007 Honda 40 hp outboard. It starts up first time everytime. I have an 18 gal built in tank. Once I fill the tank I'm good for the season. Its by far the best motor I've owned.
