mooching setup?
mooching setup?

Mooching from a pier..... Haven't done it in 35 ish years but you should get by with a lighter weight an ounce(?) or two.... try a faster retrieve to get that plug cut spinning. Any rod stiff enough, spin or bait caster that you can cast with some drag..... Too many times people get all caught up in "you have to have this kind of rod and reel to catch fish." Well, that's just not so! Fish don't care what kind of car you drive.... fish have to be there and you have to present what they want on the business end. 10-15 pound "quality" line should work just fine for fishing from a pier(unless you'll be trying to haul your catch up 20' with out the aid of a net).

Back in the early to mid 60's as a kid we used to fish off the dock at Point Defiance Boat House. We would use a couple of split shot a chain swivel and two #2 hooks. For bait we used a filet of herring. We would cast out and let 100 - 150 feet of line out and let it drift in the current. The tidal action would give the bait all the action it needed. We caught silvers, kings and the occasional steel head and sea run cut. No special rod or reel required we didn't have much back then and most of it was hand me down. Sure we got spooled a few times but that was what made for good stories. Most any rod and reel made today is better than we used so whatever you have or can afford along the lines of a steel head set up will work fine.

I agree 100% Gfakkema!! It was far better back then. My family has been fishing the point since the early 1930's. My Mother, Grandmother and Grandfather all are in pictures on the walls of the Point Defiance bait shop holding fish 30+ pounds. My Grandfather and his fishing partener are both listed on the Point Defiance Fishermans Hall Of Fame Memorial. Also in the bait shop. Great time and place to grow up. When I was 13 I had my first boat stored in a locker a the Point. If my mom couldn't find me she just called down to the bait shop to see if they had seen my boat go out. When I wasn't home I was usually fishing.
