We, i.e., Kirk and I, were going to get an early start from Kent, 0630.
However, I could not find my keys. So I got my spare key. Backed the truck up, pull the boat
on to the street to hook it up. Jump out of the truck to help hook up
the boat. The truck door locked. There the truck set with engine running with keys inside.
Called for a locksmith. Finally got underway about 0930. Arrived at the lake, started putting up the tent. A big gust of wind blew it down and it started to snow. After getting the tent up, we went fishing, there were only small white caps on the lake.. We had purchased shiners from Phil, The Bait Guy. We tried everything we knew or had been told in efforts to catch the
Legendary Brown Trout alleged to be in the lake. We had negative results. Finally gave up the pursuit of Browns and went after Rainbows. We had great luck with them. We were trolling wedding rings and a new lure, Nature, Cover the Water, with Herring Smelly Jelly We threw many 9-11" fish back. Then we went in the cove where the creek flows into the lake, found a hole and caught out limits of triploids on Power Bait, Turbo, red and yellow.
We ate at the local café. Kirk had chili, I did not. That night Kirk got sick and threw up, I did not. I told Kirk that Mike's secret of fishing the lake was to get sick while fishing the lake. (*Editor's note: I did not eat at the resort, in fact missed a promised good meal and I will be back to enjoy their hospitality!)
The next day in the morning the temperature was 26F, went at it again; however, the battery which we had charged over night went bonkers at the spillway of the dam. There is a gap between the lashed together buoys and the dam. We darn near found ourselves going over the spillway. We were towed back by some good guys with a boat with a 200 hp Yamaha, thanks guys. We decided to find the legendary Mud Lake. We were given the given the wrong directions and found ourselves away up in the hills surrounded by turkey hunters. We came back to the "Resort", struck camp and preceded to Lake Mattoon.
