After getting skunked by the local largemouths 2 days in a row, I decided to try the Lake Whatcom Smallies. My past success on Whatcom has been spotty, skunked somedays, catch a few on other days. But the last two days were like God's gift to a discouraged basser. Water temp 58-60, clear sky, light wind, almost had lake to myself . I fished the north end. Yesterday ( Wed) I hooked 3 fish in the 1st 10 casts, late got 2 fish on back to back casts. Stopped counting. Mostly males 2-3 lbs . Best bait was Smoking silver Zoom Super Fluke, got a couple on crawdad color crankbait. Today I took out two novices out plus my wife -- a bit crowded a 16.5' boat! Today, similar conditions, couple of other bass fishermen on lake. Not as hot, but hooked up with a dozen fish in 5 hours - did better after beginners left for work ;-) Fished north end again & Sudden Valley area. Lots of fish seen some males guarding beds some females just going onto beds, some just cruising around. All fish caught in 2'-6' deep. Zoom Supe fluke in Smoking silver & white both worked well. I have not had such good luck on Whatcom. since a couple of times the late 80's when it had smallmouth & scattered 4-7 lb largemouth. The smallies are lots of fun, but I miss those big largemouth, have only seen one here in the past decade. Get 'em while their hot.
