First time out for catfish, a buddy and I got out there at about midnight. Put the boat in and headed a little west. After an hour or so my friend landed a 15lb fat bellied feline fish. Boy do they ever put up a fight, he was using 10lb test, took us prolly 15- 20 min to land him. About an hour after that I landed a 13lb catfish. In the next 3 hours we got a 12lb and a 9lb catfish. Had the boat on the road by about 6:00 am. I was fairly pleased with our success, I think we can still do better in numbers and weigth, I hear there are some real lunkers in there topping 20 pounds. Its my goal to get one before they kill the lake. If anyone has some good tips for cleaning/ filleting the channel cats I would love to here em. It took me a while to get em in the freezer.

What were you using for bait? Were you fishing with a bobber or just on bottom? Were you fishing any kind of structure at all?

The cleaning/filleting part starts out with a very long and very sharp fillet knife and a good knife sharpener.

Once you are properly set up the rest is easy.

Well we used a couple baits. The perch head I used caught one, I also tried a crappie head and a chunk of bass carcass with no success. My friend out fished me 3 to 1 using hotdog. We just went last night and caught 2 the report should be up soon. Both were caught on hotdog. Sounds crazy huh? The night we caught the 4 we were actually drifting on the bottom with the breeze that kept steady all night so as far as structure I'm not sure. We would lightly cast out, careful not to lose the bait (hotdog doesnt stay on real well), then let off another 20 feet or so of line. The wind blew us parallel with the shore. Most the fish we caught were in 6 - 7 1/2 feet of water. It took patience, we went a couple times more than an hour without a fish. We just played cards till our poles bent over. I have been told that if done right you should be able to catch about a fish an hour, we aren't quite there yet. Hope this helps! any other questions just ask

Really nice fish guys. I read an article on sprague and it said that rainbow trout is the best bait for sprague. I tried it but got skunked, I also favor hotdogs

Thanks. We have fried up some of the fish and the rest is in the freezer to be eaten at a later date. The fish I did fry up tasted great! It's definately very different from any other fish I have eaten but it was good
