My friend and I went to my usual spot by Wawawai Lake. We started off trying to get the sunfish because a school of bluegills were visible from the shore. We tossed in our lines but they weren't biting at all after a few more casts the school investigated our hooks with corn/worms and then left... usually they'll bite so I'm not sure why they didn't that time.

We decided to go for the bass we could see jumping. We started with grubs and plastic worms rigged texas and wacky all of our attempts failed. We then tried some spinners of various colors again no success. We tried tube bait but I got it stuck after a few casts and gave up on that too. I finally caught 2 smallies (very small ones too!) with a grub. None of my lures or jig attempts were having any success so we moved down the river and found another spot with a lot of leaping bass and bites and tried live worms and various lures until it got really late. We weren't able to land anything it was a really crazy day because they were jumping right next to us and they usually always bites when they are like that.. so I don't know what the deal was we just weren't presenting ourselves very well I guess.

It was very beautiful out so it was worth the trip regardless of only 2 small ones. I'm sure next time we'll do better.

when bass are jumping, try top water lures like Rapalas.

It is doubtful that what you were seeing was bass. Bass seldom jump unless they are feeding on bait fish schools, damselflies, or on the rare occasion other bugs. Usually bass will hub the bottom when the temperatures get this warm, especially Smallies.

Try the Bluegills again without corn on the hook. Sometimes when the Dog Days of Summer are on, only the smallest offering will get them. Perhaps a size 16 nymph?

The jumping fish were probably smaller carp.
