First time we ever went to Downs. The State fishing pamphlet list it as having a public launch. It doesn't. The only launch is from the..ahem... less than 5 star resort there, on a steep and warped old concrete ramp which costs you 5 bucks to use. I had my doubts my 2 wheel drive Toyota p.u. could even get back up out of the lake, so we opted to carry the boat from the trailer to the water the last 30 feet. Sometimes we are glad we have a small boat.
It was a perfect evening for fishing. We fished from 5 pm till dark for perch and crappie. We tried every trick we know. Fished high, fished low, and caught nothing! First time we both have been skunked all year. We saw 4 other boats who also caught nothing. Talked to one guy at the docks who caught 1 small bass. We got conflicting reports from people on the water and shore about when the fishing is good there regarding the season, water temp, etc... Not sure what to think.
We did enjoy boating around this lake. It's rather unique in its features. Kind of like boating around in the everglades in a scab rock desert. It looks like a lake that should have a lot of perch and crappie but....Oh well, not today.
We watched a fantastic sunset from the water, then carried out boat and gear back up to the trailer and went home.
