Sorry about running over your worm...joking. Unfortunately there is always a jerk in a crowd. Hopefully he got skunked and decided to give up on Silver Lake, forever.

9/13/2007 1:48:00 AMSmallies? This is the second thread I have seen this year with folks mentioning catching Smallies out of here. Been fishing at Silver for as long as I can remember and have never seen or caught a Smallie. Anybody know what is going on here, or if there is any validity to this?
As for the jumpers they are most likely Carp. They are very abundant and active here, to the point of outright annoying at times.

9/14/2007 8:59:00 AMI think there are a few smallies in Silver - but not many. I recall back in the1980s when a very knowledgeable member of our bass club reported catching a smallie in Silver Lake.

9/14/2007 2:41:00 PMI have never seen or caught a smallmouth in Silver, but I have heard that there are a few...very few. Alot of smaller largemouth bass are mistakenly identified as smallmouth bass. I've met quite a few people who make the same mistake, so I usually will show them how to be sure by closing the fish's mouth and seeing if the mouth extends beyond the eye. If it does, it ain't a smallmouth.
But hey, it's a common mistake. Especially for folks who don't regularly fish for bass or are learning about bass.

9/15/2007 9:11:00 AMMaybe Jo is refering to small sized large mouth bass as "smallies" whereby others might call them "dinks" or "shakers". I've never heard of smallmouth being on Silver Lake either, and I belong to a club that has fished here a long time.

9/15/2007 9:07:00 PMI was meaning smallmouth when I said "smallies". But I have to say it's very possible that I misidentified it, since I'm pretty new to catching them. I have looked through the rest of the pictures posted here and as far as I remember mine did not have a mouth and throat as big, but I did not do judge using the technique cavdad mentioned. I wish I would have had my picture phone so you guys could give your opinion, but I had left it at home. If more people would take pictures of the littler stuff they catch, it would help! It's also possible that the fish that jumped was a carp since it was pretty dark a distance off.
BTW, I really appreciate the feedback from everyone, it's a big help to us newbies (not Newby's since of course they need no help!). :)
