this lake definately takes patience , my rig of choice is a double rig (2 hooks set a about 3 feet apart on triple swivels and about a 1foot leader to each hook with weight hanging at the very bottom, if I'm goin for sturgeon its fresh live sand shrimp on the bottom hook an a whole nightcrawler on the top hook , if its carp or or just anything I'm after, I'll put a worm on the bottom and like 5 whole kernel corn pieces on the top hook, a small hook on top an a medium hook on bottom , (corn is legal at this lake because chumming is permitted here as well as bow an arrow from a boat , if going for sturgeon make sure sturgeon hook is barbless or u can get a ticket, there are some days i don't catch anything but generally its cause i miss the bite , the days i do catch like last month was a 10lb 33 inch sturgeon or a 5+ lb carp both are incredible fights , i know nobody likes to eat carp (well none i know ) but what fighters these guys are , i've caught ,brown bullhead cats , carp , sturgeon, trout, when the shad run i see ppl catching shad at flushing channel entrance, perch, large 3lb suckers, largemouth bass , and some fish that looked just like a flounder , but some days there's just not a good bite happening I'll let my bait sit for 1 hour at a time b4 i reel in an check an re-cast ,take a chair an a good book put a lil bell on yer pole ,relax an wait for the big one , one day my buddy was just messin around an threw a lil line with a bobber an a lil worm about 3 feet out (mind u he had no pole an had the line in his hand ,less than 3 seconds later a huge 7lb or so carp rolled on top went down an grabbed his worm an ripped the line from his hand snapping it an cutting his hand, neither of us could believe it an i doubt I'll ever see anything like that again ............good luck ppl don't give up
Hey Ben, Thanks for the report was going to go out to Vancouver Lake this afternoon and try and get a sucker or some squawfish. Are you fishing the lake end of the flushing channel or the river end. I fished the river end a few times last year and twice so far this year with no fish at all. Last year there were a bunch of guys at the lake end catching a lot of pan fish, but it is probably still too cold for them to come up to the shallows.
this lake is a great summer and fall lake. Ive never had very much luck in th spring or winter there. Its the type of fishing where you never know what your going to catch. I always use worms here and have caught largemouth, smallmouth, bluegil, carp, crappie, Shad (once), catfish, suckers but have never caught a sturgen in it. I have heard they were in there and i have caught them on worms in lake river in Ridgfield but never in the lake. I guess I'll have to try shrimp. Ive been out to the lake once this year and got skunked. cant wait to go back because the water is warming.
are the surgeon in the lake or out by the mouth of the creek where it dumps into the columbia river
