I went out Sunday evening and Tuesday evening to Lake Erie. Both were less than spectacular events. Fishing was hard although there were fish marking all over the lake on my fish locator. I tried the usual colors of Wooley Buggers, light olive, dark olive, black and brown. I also tried with and without beads or cones. Nothing seemed to work well. I then varied size and speed of trolling. Again, not much change. I ended up with about a dozen to the boat on Sunday and a half dozen last night. This is a very poor showing for this early in the year.

There were a number of boats on the lake both evenings. They had about the same luck that I had. Light olive with some red wire on it seemed to work best in a size 8 or 10. Make sure you cut the tail back a lot because the fish are somewhat lethargic and short hits were very common.

Still a lot of fun and nice to be on the water again.

Good to read a report from Erie. I fished Heart twice after the opener and did okay but they weren’t jumpin in the boat by any means. I was curious how Erie was producing. It is such a shallow lake so you would think your fly is in their face the entire time it is in the water. At Lake Sixteen a week ago, the olive woolly bugger was producing well but using a floating line and trolling fast were the keys to the bite. Thanks for the report.
