Started to fish for walleye, but after two that were 23" and four smaller ones, the bite slowed by 9 AM. We tried for bass around Steamboat rock and took some dinks, mostly on power grubs and 1/8 oz. football head jigs.
I think the lake was being drawn down as very few bass in shallow water and the topwater temp was 63F. The warm water layer was very thin as it was 55F a couple of feet down, and the males were not staging on the main lake.
The cold front had also moved thru the area. As you read this the situation may have changed by next weekend, the smallies should be in pre-spawn soon, and those 50 fish days will be the norm.
Walleye fishing is the best I can remember at the lake. Not to say it was easy, but the population is increasing every year and needs more pressure before it turns into a sprague lake situation.
