At the risk of starting a stamede, here's the latest scoop on lake SAmm chinook. In a word - they are in! My son James and I went out Monday night and fished 4:30 to 8pm. We saw about a dozen caught among 12 boats. One guide was just tearing them up. As near as I could see, virtually everyone is going flasher and bare hooks, although maybe some herring strips thrown in? Guys are fishing in front of the creek, most are trolling, a few jigging. Fish are suspended. Big rainstorm with thunder, lightning. Glad we stayed though, as you will read...

We anchored and slept in the boat. This morning I had the lines working at 6:15 (and yes, everyone, there is a second angler on board - he's in the cutty!). Anyway, I decided to mix it up to start and ran kwikfish and a magnum wiggle wart. The kwikfish paid off as at 6:30am we hooked into a nice chinook. 24 ft on the rigger, 45-50 ft deep. James did the netting (that's what happens when you're crashed in the cutty). Soon after I saw fish getting caught pretty consistantly, so we switched back to flashers/hooks. Also ran some herring strips (thanks to the friendly guy that tossed me a horse herring). Sad to say, we couldn't get another fish. Again, the same guide from last night was just slamming them. I bet they most have caught 8 fish this morning, it was unreal. I couldn't for the life of me see what he was doing different from everyone else, but that boat was putting us all to shame. There were about 24 boats this morning.

I hope to gt out a couple more times this week. BTW, the fish are colored but the meat looked good and isn't mushy, at least mine wasn't.

Mike, my bet is the guide was fishing within a couple of feet from the bottom. Give it a shot and let us know how it goes. I'd be out there but have a prior camping trip to Birch Bay planned for the week.

That guide was probably Eli Rico. Well know for his Lake Samm king catching abilities.

Nice fish Mike. Good for you. Sad to see so many people fishing so close to the creek and in CLOSED WATERS. Come on "sportsman", stay out a couple hundred feet and be sporting about it. I hope some of those guys fishing so close to the creek get ticketed.
Nice fish Mike!

When you say flashers and bare hooks... is that just plain standard silver hooks, or are you talking about some of the pink hooks that are out there? How much length of leader behind the flasher?
Thanks.

A couple responses: The guide mentioned could very well be the one (without givng an "official" recommendation, LOL). My next time out I'll try hugging the bottom, athough most fish I found to be marking higher up in the water collumn. And I did go deeper at times without success. But you know I would be the first to admit to gettign lazy and leaving the rigger at a set depth. Hook colors - black, red, pink/orange, blue, I saw them all. Length - the said guide's looked to be at least twice the length of a larger flasher, so say 20-24"? As to fishing too close to the mouth of the creek. Frankly, I have a hard time estimating 100 yards looking from a moving boat toward a "mouth of a creek". I did stay outside of the no wake buoy by around 30 yards or so, which I felt to be easily 100 yards. The only questionable anglers I thought were the jiggers which definatey were in close (besides which, I couldn't help but wonder if some of those fish were snaggd, but they always got netted on the shore-side so I couldn't see them).

I don't know, maybe doesn't close? These are excess fish coming through after all.

I was out there again on saturday. Fished the Chinnok in the morning no luck. Switched over to smallies caugth a few had fun. Trolled the evening bite caught one Chinnok on dodger with bare blue hooks and a 12" leader. I watched the Guide for both bites and his 3 clients limited in the morning anf his two new clients caught 3 in the evening. He is definately using a longer leader couldn't get a good look and he also cups his hands over his hooks as he puts them in the water so he can't see what he is using. I will be out again this saturday and possibly Sunday. Wish all of you luck

I know that some use a small scent sack or herring strips, could be one of those. We tried both, didn't help us the other day.
