Went out on Lk. Wa. today for about 6.5 hours, Uhg! I split my time between fishing for smb, and trolling for cutthroat.
First off, I met with no success on either. Put me in my small little urban lakes and I feel so comfortable with the bassing, but put in Lk. Wa. and it's just overwhelming on where to start. I covered an insane amount of ground, at least for me.
I did find that the docks along the West side of Mercer Is. seem to have very fast drop offs, like 30-40' right out from the dock, and limited weeds. But no bass for me.
I then trolled for the cutts. using both a single small silver flasher followed up by a wedding ring, and later using a pop gear stringer followed by another wedding ring. I did this along West side of Mercer Is. going south around to the East side. No hits, I closed out the night by going all the way up to the N. side of 520. where I made 2 East/West passes. I did pull in one small shaker, didn't get a close look at it. What really sucks I see about trolling on a downrigger.... is that when you bring in a shaker, you are kinda pissed because it may have been on there for the majority of the time your line was in the water. Maybe it is smart to check your line more often.

Bummer! We've all had days like that on Lake Washington! However, that is one of the things I like about fishing this lake, the challenge of consistently locating and catching fish throughout the year. I'll be giving it a go this Friday and I'm drafting a new battle plan this evening. Quad, I'll be posting some info in the Product and Gear section this week regarding downrigger trolling equipment that should help spot a shaker on the end of your line.

Hey Quad, one way to fish those big lakes is to pick a small area and fish it like you do those small lakes.
