Hit the water at 7 am but the fog was too thick for me to try venturing away from shore on my first time at lake Goodwin.
I worked the shallow shore line with a Sinko with no luck until the fog cleared. Then I tried throwing a brown split-tail plastic jig and got two small small mouths.
I took a break for lunch around 11 am to have a sandwich, so I drop shotted a live worm in about 10' of water and just set the rod down and drifted while I ate.
When I looked up from my sandwich the pole was bent over and I thought "hung up on the bottom" until I picked it up and that's when the fish took off with about 30' of line. I dropped my sandwich in the bottom of the boat and adjusted the drag on the spinning real worrying all the time that I might tighten it too much and snap the 10 lb test I was using. The fish never jumped but made 4 or 5 runs before I could get it close enough to the boat to see what it was. The flash of its side of bronze told me it was a small mouth bass, but the size didn't match what I'd been told about small mouths. This thing was big and I didn't have a net (I never thought I'd need one). I put on a glove and laid down in the boat and reached over the side and just scooped him in with my hand. Once he was in the boat I started laughing saying "I can't believe it" over and over again.
My wife and I ate that fish for dinner and there was still a small piece left over for a sandwich next day.

Nothing wrong with that fish, good job. Gotta love the way smallies fight huh? Not sure about the taste though??

next time check the slot limit on bass because you just killed one in the slot limit

prudman - how do you figure that? It's a smallmouth over 14". Let's be sure before we call people out on stuff like this. Unless I'm wrong, you owe someone an apology. Nice fish William. Here are the regs:

LARGEMOUTH BASS
No min. size. Only BASS less than 12" may be retained, except 1 over 17" may be retained. Daily limit
5. Bass may be caught, retained, and released alive from a livewell until a daily limit is in possession.
SMALLMOUTH BASS
No min. size. Only 1 BASS over 14" may be retained. Daily limit 10. Bass may be caught, retained,
and released alive from a livewell until a daily limit is in possession.

That fish is easily over 14 inches. I mean look at the pic of him inside, it's easy to see. Had it been a largemouth, well, it'd been a different story....AWESOME fish. How do those things taste? I've always heard bass taste nasty.
