Hit Sprague on Sunday with a buddy and his son. We only fished about 2.5 hours and caught 2 large rainbows. The fish were very healthy 16 and 18 inchers. My friend caught his on a mealworm and a chartreuse marshmallow about 18 to 20 inches off the bottom. I caught mine with a red and white jig, tipped with a mealworm. My fish hit when the jig was on the up swing closer to the ice. The ice was in good shape- 8-10 inches- 4 inches of it being clear on the bottom. The ice around the edge at the WDFW launch looked a bit iffy and may make it difficult to get out on the ice in a week or so if the temps don't start dropping.

great report, thx for posting. i am kicking around the idea of heading to sprague this weekend. was there any standing snow on the ice? or slush? you may have seen mine and other reports for eloika lately, where there was a ton of water & slush on top of the ice, so i was just curious.

also, did you end up getting out on the ice at the launch where you said it was a bit iffy or did you go elsewhere? i've never been, so just wondering where might be the best access point.

thanks!

Morning- there wasn't any snow or slush when I went. It was all hard. However, as it warmed up a little bit of water formed on the surface. It was a very thin layer, just enough to make it slick. I did get on at the WDFW spot where there was an area straight out from the middle of the launch, about 12 feet wide that was fine; outside the 12 foot area along the shore was not solid. That was the only spot that looked iffy. I hope the conditions remain the same, I'd like to go out again.

I read your report for Eloika, what do you think the ice is like now?

thanks for the follow-up! eloika... good question. the thought of perch and crappie has me leaning toward going there, as it's about the same drive as sprague for me (i live in liberty lake). i haven't seen any recent reports for eloika lately though, and our last trip was pretty rough!

the other idea swimming around in my head is to just go ahead and get my ID fishing license early (i usually buy it in spring before the boating season) and try to catch some pike thru the ice.

The weather the last couple days could play in your favor for Sprague. I may head out sometime this weekend. I always get an Idaho license but I haven't ice fished there, and my license just expired at the New Year- so, I'm going to wait until spring.

In two weeks or three weeks I'm heading up to Nespelem to the Twin Lakes, last year it had some pretty quick action but requires a tribal license. The fish have sea lice too, so it was catch and release for me, but it didn't effect their fight. They were nothing like the size of the trout in Sprague though. Good ice up there.

Good Luck!
