2/20/2009 8:19:00 AMsweet fish... your doing well at lake stevens. Personaly, I would toss those treble hooks and go with a standard bait hook with the power bait. But each to his own. Really though, just switch up and try different style hooks. Also, I say this only because you said your new to fishing,, but if your fishing bait therefor it sounds like your keeping your fish, which is fine, a lot of people early on in fishing are too quick to set the hook. I am guilty of this sometimes too. I find that with powerbait trout fishing, just let them snack on it for a bit. It all depends on the lake/situation etc. but most simple trout aren't that picky or smart with power bait.

2/20/2009 2:51:00 PMI'm going to use a standard hook with some power bait or power eggs today after work. When I get a bite I'll try to just let them munch on it for a bit this time too. I turn in to an excited little kid when I feel a fish on the line and it's like a natural reaction to try and set the hook.

I've done my share of power bait fishing over the years and never even caught one that big :) As far as the bites go, if I'm fishing with a tight line and notice a bite, I'll open the bail and point the rod tip down and let the fish run with the line for a few seconds. He won't feel the line, gives him time to eat the bait, and makes you wait before setting the hook. The other thing is you don't have to set the hook really hard. Most likely the bait's in his belly by then and a good pull on the rod will be a fine hook set.

2/20/2009 7:11:00 PMI like using a small red gamakatsu egg hook. they are light enough so your power bait/eggs float well, and they are super sharp! where on the lake were you fishing?

2/20/2009 9:47:00 PMI went out again after work today and pulled in a couple more. This time I got both fish that I hooked and none got away. I used a single standard hook with power bait. This time I waited a bit before setting the hook and then as I started reeling in and knew I had him on; I set it again. Not bad for just 1.5 hours of fishing. I'll be posting another report with pics tonight.

2/21/2009 1:08:00 PMa good trick to hook trout is when you feel a bite let him take the bait all the way any just reel in kinda fast so you dont rip the lips on the trout. i have lost many trout to torn lips of not waiting for the trout to take the bait all the way.

2/22/2009 1:04:00 PMQuadfather is right about treble hooks -- you'd be better off using a #6 or #8 single. You'll get much better penetration on hook sets, and it's less likely that a fish will be able to get off during the fight.
