Went out to Lake Fontal Today. The hike in was very pleasant even though we had full packs on, it was a breeze though if you have a GPS or know the area. The reward was dandy although no fish today this little lake looks very promising, we saw a handful of fish surfacing but the lake has the kind of habitat that would hold some large fish. Just got to figure out what they will bite on in the colds of winter. I will be back to try again very soon and FYI for anyone going up there it looked as if there are possibly a couple of big cats frequenting the the trail up we came across an few week old kill and lots and lots of fresh cougar scat. Just keep an eye out if you hike all the way in. But its a great little lake and don't let that deter you.
p.s. if anyone knows what works up there i would love some hints(catch and release)

a lot of the older reports say that the access to the lake is all but cut-off by private property. Is there still some kind of Youth camp which doesn't allow you to park there any more?
I appreciate the report from an outlying lake, it's nice to hear about some of these tucked away ones.

I fished up there a few times last summer. Caught a few nice cut-bows. After talking w/ the youth camp leaders i was granted access to fish that lake (forget name), but surrounding fontal and the lake w/ the youth camp on it is all private property. Fontal is just to the north of the youth camp lake. Be careful up there, as even w/ permission to be up there i was locked in twice.

Yes I am aware of its property status as belonging to the Camp back there. Last year my first time up there we got locked in at the gate, we talked to a man who worked at the camp and said it was ok for us to fish the lake but not to park on the other end of the lake he told us to drop our gear off at the trail head and park the car on the public side of the gate. So it sounds like the trout up there are of nice size but cant get them to take a fly. Then again i have only hiked up there in the winter. Thanks lowvw for the heads up though.

Most of the fish that i pulled out of that area where between 10-16". Had one cut at about 18" but was real long and skinny. I had better luck fishing the small beaver ponds in that area versus the larger lakes. Real nice quiet area. Good luck.
