Hi fellas. Newbie's first report.

A friend and I hit Lake Samish in the afternoon of April 2, not expecting anything, just whetting our apetites for the season opening. Casting from the shore at the state park, we floated pink and orange powerbait eggs off the bottom at about 40-60 feet, and kicked back to swap stories and enjoy the view.

To our surprise, we start pulling in little 6-inch rainbows. In four hours, I hooked three (and lost 1) and my pal hooked one (and lost 3).

To top off the day, we each caught an 8-inch lake trout. They were skinny, but put up a healthy fight. Didn't know Samish had 'em.

All were released to bite another day.

No photos. Too embarrassing. I'll upload some photos when I catch a fish that's bigger than my shoe.

No sir. It's the park fronting on the deep, western portion of the lake, on North Lake Samish Drive.

I believe Lake Samish (Whatcom County) holds kokanee as well. Good to hear the lake is producing something this early, The water is still very cold. 46 degrees F at Blackman's Lake in Snohomish this morning. Thanks for the report.

TruefishermanC, the writer is talking about Lake Sammish near Bellingham,, not Lk. Sammamish near Issaqua.

Samish Park is a Whatcom County Park, last October WDFW stocked 10,000 fingerling bows. I'm not sure about the lakers but I do know there are some trips in here but the real prize is the cutts with only a 2 fish limit and minimum size of 14 inches it is a great fishery although most folks target the kokes here.

Unk Wes is right. It's a Whatcom county park, not a state park. My bad, and thanks for the clarification. Went back today - same friend, same bait, same spot, same depth - and we were just about skunked. Pulled in one skinny laker at the end of the afternoon. Beautiful day to sit at the lake though.

Hey Lucky, Could you send me a pic of your lakers I don't doubt your word but I would really like to see one. Might explain some of the larger blips on the finder.

Sorry, we didn't take pictures. I'm not much of a camera guy anyway, and I was too focussed on keeping them in the water while I got the hooks out. I'll pull out my iPhone and try to get you a pic next time though.

Thanks. The reason I knew that Samish was part of the county parks system is that I worked at Silver Lake which is also part of the county system for 5 years, until my position was dropped. I had the pleasure of living in the Maple Falls area for 8+ years, a wonderful community. I've only been gone for less than a year and miss it a great deal. Samish Lake was a favorite of mine and I worked it many times and have published several articles on this lake in newspapers and magazines. I plan on working the lakes in that area again sometime in June. Enjoy it, I know I did.

Good job Mr Lucky. Samish can be a dead sea at times, any fish is a good fish! If you get back out, I would also like to see a picture of one of the lake trout you are catching. Like Wes, I don't doubt it, it seems like samish has a little bit of everything. good luck...

Under the diabilities act Samish Lake WDFW boat access site will be completed as in the old RCO's plan and permit. A floating dock installed. Rocks boulders removed replaced with sand and gravel for safe beaching of boats. Lake Samish housing association intervened with DFWD not to improve the access in 2011 since they did not want the public to use this lake for fishing or recreation. Phone John Hanson 360-902- 8386 engineer; Shane Belson 360-902-2375 manger access state wide,. Delores 360-902-2349 Disabilties manager. Please call and support persons with disabilites to safely launch a boat onto Lake Samish. Two handicap parking spots for truck trailer parking nearest to boat launch
