Hey all,
Went to the main branch of the Tacoma Public Library and finally dug up a topo map of this lake. I'm sending a copy of it to Mike. According to the map it has a maximum depth of about 10 ft., though the accuracy is in question. I can't seem to remember when they stopped pumping the muck off the bottom for the hospital farm. But all said and done, the lake should be wade-able through out. I'll be giving it a try.
Reports I've gotten from friends who do the nocturnal thing, is that fishing has been VERY slow. However; they did report what they thought were Bass attacking the occasional small Trout being reeled in through the Lily Pads.
This news getting my juices flowing, I promptly drove down to Sportco and talked to a guy who bore a striking resemblance to Bill Herzog of steelheading fame. He set me up with the stuff for a shot rig and some black 4" worms with chartreuse tails, and told me that was what a lot of of the tournament guys were using right now.
I then drove back to Lakewood and fished hard for about four hours. I got one pull that probably could have been converted into a hook up had I set the hook like I had a "pair" instead of the gentle "trout lift" I gave him. (I'm a fly-fisherman learning to use gear)
To most of you this would equate to a lousy day's fishing, but to a guy that honestly doesn't know what the hell he's doing it was a major breakthrough. That Bass sent me a very clear message: You're getting war-mer!!!
Hopefully with the weather beginning to warm up and stabilize the residents of the lake should begin being active again.
I guess I should report that the annual summer algae bloom has begun to show in portions of the lake. By August it'll be thick enough to coat your fishing line. I also found another report (this time from a WDFW web page) that Black Crappie make their home here. I've yet to see or hear of any evidence of their presence.
