Took a co-worker up to Lake Whatcom this morning for his first smallmouth trip. Day started very slow, tried spinnerbaits before the sun got too high, then switched up between different depth and color crankbaits and nothing. My friend got a snag and on the way to get it I spooked a bass in about 5' of water, so I knew they were there. We tried numerous rocky areas and then began fishing pilings. The first fish was about a pounder I caught on a 4" Yamamoto single tail grub in watermellon green on a 1/4oz lead jig head painted black. This fish was on pilings in about 15' of water near a spawning flat. So I positioned the boat in about 20' off of a flat and we began casting grubs up onto the flat and dragging them back into deeper water. That was the ticket for us, we hit about 10 or so in three hours with the biggest going about 2lbs. However, my friend caught his first ever smallie and was pumped, so it was a great trip!

Water temps were 53-54 in the north end and dropped to 50-51 south of Geneva Point... You will see the flats with scattered rocks and logs on them they range from 5-8' and appear very bright compared to the deeper water just off of them. One point produced 5 fish alone.....keep the grub on the bottom and drag it so it produces a silt trail behind it, then pause it and shake your rod tip.

Once the sun came up and started doing it's thing, I caught one on a spinnerbait shallow near reeds. However, we did have a couple 2+lb'ers follow our grubs back to the boat, I think a few more degrees of water temp and they will start hitting moving baits a bit more aggressively?!

My friend had to be home early so we split, but I would suspect bigger fish moving towards the spawning flats if this weather holds....
