My wife said this morning that she wanted to go to Rufus Woods to do some fishing and I never argue with her. So…after watching Hawg Quest I went outside to get the boat in order. As I was readying the boat my wife got a call to come into work. She returned home just after noon and said “I still want to go” So, ever the obedient husband, I agreed and we headed for the lake. Upon arrival to the lake I found it strange that there was only three other rigs in the lower parking lot until my wife reminded me that it was Mothers day. My wife and I had both called our mothers before we left the house and my wife had received calls from all of our children on the way to the lake. So…with our mother’s day celebrations completed we launched the boat just after 2:00pm from the corps boat launch. Water temp was 43.7 to 44.2 degrees. Outside air temp was running around 70 degrees. It was a beautiful day to be out on the water so tempting fate I asked my wife if she would like to run up to the pens. To my surprise she said yes and without giving her a chance to change her mind I hit the gas. On the way to the lower pens we saw and counted 20 or so deer along the south bank, numerous bald eagles and watched an eagle take a duck that took flight to avoid my boat…If I would have only had the movie camera. We arrived at the lower pens just after 3:00 pm and started casting marabou jigs. We pulled several fish in the two to three pound range using several different color jigs but the most effective color today was olive green. We caught fish on almost all colors we pitched at them but olive green produced fish almost two to one over any other color. Olive green produced so well today that I thought I would try casting the bluefin loui recommended B-2 squid in motor oil color and I pulled the one fish that we kept for dinner because it was hooked to deep to survive. (See photo) I purposely avoided using a Trout Pellet fly today until the very end of the day because my wife made a comment earlier this week that since I’ve been using the Trout Pellet Fly at Rufus Woods my tackle spending had decreased. I figured with that statement that my tackle budget was in danger and like government spending “If you don’t spend it this year…it won’t be available next year. We were the only boat fishing at the lower pens for over three hours until one boat came up and began to crowd us. Knowing that there was a lot more water available to us we headed back down river to try a couple of spots that I spied earlier in the day. I found the boat in camp ground and while my wife was checking the condition of the area I made a few casts with a Trout Pellet Fly and I was able to catch and release two small (Less than one pound) Triploids in about a half hour casting from the dock. After my Saturday outing to overcrowded and trashed Beehive Reservoir today was a very welcome reprieve. Lake Rufus Woods is just flat out a great place to spend a mother’s day or any other day for that matter. I can hardly wait until father’s day…

What wonderful way to spend mothers day or any other day.Great report looking forward to my next trip to RW.I have been fishing some local lakes on the west side and your pellet fly works great on recently planted fish

Big D. What's the weight size on the jigheads that you were throwing? 1/8 th or 1/4 oz? Loui really knows his stuff don't he?! he gave me some of those b-2 squids and I love them for triploids and walleye. nice pic too. TJM

Good report BigD, We live A rough life, you and I. Our wives requesting to go fishing even after a hard days work, and actually enjoying the outings. We have to Keep Them Happy.

Thanks Aaron, Hey Ganno, Thank you and I'm very glad to hear that the Trout Pellet Flies are working for you. I found out last weekend that they also work for freshly stocked fish in lakes other than RW. Hey Jigmiester, Thank you...I've been using the B-2 squids with a 1/8oz jig in still water and 1/4oz in some of the heavier current and you're correct about Loui. He's one of the most knowable and generous fishermen I’ve ever had the opportunity to talk with. Loui...Thank you, you’re correct about having the wife with you out on the water. She even told me last weekend that she's starting to find the sport of fishing very relaxing, who would have figured?

Nice job D! My wife is usually game and does suggest fishing from time to time but with a fresh grand daughter and great gradmas to entertain I was curtailed to fishing Sat only. I give it a few months and we'll be back on schedule too. In a year or so we'll be having another fisher person to go....... =)
