With the clear weather, and lack of wind, I decided to drop in on my closest lake for some rowing/trolling. Since we now have established that Green Lake has a no motor restriction, I thought it sporting to row around for the first time, but have the electric motor mounted just in case.

Got started about 06:30. Trolled a wide variety of lures. Had two strikes on a rapala plug, and one spin casting a roostertail, but not solid hookups and no fish brought to hand via trolling. So, after 4 hours of that, I decided to park the boat near shore, and still fish some good old power eggs and power bait off of the bottom. Thought this break would be good for eating a sandwhich. Well, I must have picked a good spot because pretty much right away I hooked up a little stocker. And this happened four times in a row, taking less than 30 seconds of bait in the water before the pole tip started a wiggling. After releasing 4 of these little guys, I decided to stop, eat, then head back out rowing with one fish left in my limit.

Unfortunately, after just a couple strokes, one of my oar locks fell apart. No more rowing! So I decided to use the forbidden electric motor (OMG!) to get back to my launch point and call it a day. Well, after motoring only about 25 feet, I notice a concerned citizen waving his arms my way. He then yells out to me ,"no motors alllowed!" I holler back, "I broke my oar!", while waving the oar with the missing oar lock attachment. Apparently, not satisfied with my excuse he continues, "you are going to get a ticket!". I then suggest to him to call the police, and that I know the rules. That ended that ship to shore communication.

Luckily, when I reached the launch area, there were no police officers there waiting to take me to jail. Whew! Another emergency survived, and a dramatic end to another adventure in urban fishing. :)

What is the deal with the no motor restriction? That seems kind of extreme. Good thing you brought it along with you this time.

Urban, I like your story! The thing that kills me the most about your story is that it's not about the right/wrong of this pointless rule.
The funny part is that some Yahoo on the shoreline who has a glimpse of knowledge on the rules.... is so up in arms to communicate with you about your breaking the law. I mean,, use a little self control dude.
I do love that lake. Spend some time on bitter, I know you've been out there. From now until Sept. the rock bass are outa control. Plus there are a few LMB in there as well.

So I've heard there are Tiger Muskie in Green Lake, planted about 7 or 8 years ago. Ever see one caught? Or is it a fish story?

What kind of hook are you using to safely release the little guys on power eggs? I want to release the little guys too, but they take the size 6 egg hook too deep in the throat.

Thats interesting. While I don't get the rule, I guess rules are rules. I have no problem with someone informing someone of the rule, but your explanation should have been satisfactory. Thanks for the report!

About time I chimed in here... :)
ja_lange, last Spring, I took my first voyage of my portabote on Green Lake, and posted the report about it. Thanks to the knowledgeable folks on this site, I got enlightened to the no motor rule. I have never seen the signs myself, but I called the city to verify: http://www.washingtonlakes.com/ReportComment.aspx?id=47512&lid=446&t=1 .

Hey, Quad. Yeah that guy was fishing on the bank and maybe he could not stand to see a boater cheating -- why not give the cheater some grief, I understand. I saw another boat with three guys in it trolling away working the east side like me, while I rowed. I just used the motor to get back to the launch, where before that, it was out of the water, while I rowed for 4 hours. Thanks for the tips on Bitter, I think I will visit it in the near future.

Rockndiver, apparently years ago some muskie were planted to try to control the more than healthy grass carp population. I have never seen one caught or heard of one caught. Those carp sure are big though.

Retrunofthefish, I use a pretty big hook that the real small fish have trouble ingesting. These ones seemed in decent shape when I released them, but sometimes I deem it proper to keep them.

Hi, Jake. Yes, he seemed justified in making sure I knew the rules. My guess is that they don't want a bunch of fishing boats getting in the way of the shell rowers. I think they want to support the shell rowing on the lake over fishing via boat. I did have to dodge a few shell rowers and got a lure tangled on one of their lane marker ropes.
