A buddy and I hiked up to Pine Lake on Saturday morning to catch a few trout. This is the most consistently good fishing I have found in a lake in Western Washington and we try to make it up here a few times every summer. The key is to take a raft or float tube as the shore access makes it tough to cover much water from shore. We fished with small panther martins on ultra light spinning set ups from a good sized infatable raft (not easy to carry up there but comfy to fish out of). Silver worked the best in the morning but once the sun broke through the clouds, flatter non-metallic lure colors seemed to work better. We caught fish fairly consistently for 4-5 hours, and ended up with a couple dozen caught between the two of us. The largest were 14-15 inches and all were cutthroat. We have caught a lot of fish longer than these over the past several years here but the fish seem healthier this year than they have in the past. All of the fish we caught fought hard and seemed quite a bit fatter for this time of year than usual. And we didn't see as many stunted fish (long and skinny with huge heads).
It is a fairly brutal hike but worth it if you really want to catch some nice trout, only 2-1/2 miles or so. Do a little research on Pine and Cedar lakes and you can find many accounts on the toughness of the hike. You can camp up there but please respect the no campfire rules.
