I have been not so patiently waiting for the stars to align so I could finally start fishing topwater and expect to catch fish. I was on the water @ 4:45 and fishing by 5:00 am. At 5:02 I had my first LM to the boat. It wasn't the type of fish you would photograph at just over 3lbs. but it ate a buzzbait. In the next hour I caught 3 more all in that 3-3.5 range on the buzzer. These weren't the big summer time exposions that leave you with a slack line. They were of the toilet flush variety that you can't possibly screw up. I fish a big buzz bait. It is about 6 inches long from line tie to the end of the trailer. I typically throw white and then I will also throw a white one and if it's really tough my fall back buzzer is white. I have found that when the first pads are just starting to pop a slower retrieve that is just below the surface will get you bit more than fishing it fast. These fish weren't reacting to it they were tracking it and eating it. The prop was the only thing you could see when you swung em over the rail. Once the sun popped up I went bed hunting. I found a fair amount of SM beds with males gaurding. I didn't find any LM beds but I found 10-12 pairs fo LM in less that a foot of water in the middle of the day away from cover. On Wednesday I caught a 5 pound female SM that had not spawned yet but I believe for the most part the SM are done. Not to say you couldn't go hammer little males on beds for the next couple of weeks but the females have completed ther task and moved deeper. The full moon is Saturday and that should send a huge wave of LM to beds.

Good stuff DC. I tried in vain for my first buzzbait fish on Sunday, but that was over here on the wetside. Heading to your side of the mountains this weekend and hope to catch a buzz(bait fish) or two.

Nothing better and more fun than catching fish on a top water bait! What portion of the lake were you fishing?

I ran all over and anywhere there was emerging pads and shade. Its more of a pattern deal that a spot thing. I wouldn't expect it to stay productive for very long in the morning becasue most of the LM have moved up to spawn and after the sun comes up they will resume to their duties. By July it will be on big time.

Brett, nice to see you reporting man, you get plenty of time on the water.

I got that bass bedded up by The Thumb's house to strike, but it didn't stick, then it holed up under that big root ball. Our docks got punished yesterday (3 boats all working the same area at the same time) so I wouldn't imagine its going to produce well except weekday mornings.
