Took the family out to our favorite stomping grounds of Lake Cushman.
Arrived late Saturday and ended the trip late Monday.
Started trolling for kokes but was unable find any, other anglers seemed to
find them just fine. We did catch a few cutts that ranged from 10-18 inches, then a few
brookies, the largest going around 22inches. I was also able to catch a decent smallmouth
bass off a Kastmaster spoon near the north end of the lake just a few yards south of the bridge.
Water temps were cold....VERY COLD. Temps ranged from 38-44 with the warmest water
being near the dam. The trout were near the surface and then lingered around 15ft down.
Bank anglers seem to be having just as much luck as boaters.

While chatting at the resort,a story was making its rounds that 2 divers were working
on the dam and surfaced quickly because of a very large fish that spooked them.
Its very possible that this story has some added depth to it but it certainly
adds to the mystery of the lake. I have no doubts that big fish lurke in here...just not
sure how big. Check out the fish pic board at the resort....nice fish on there.

Weather was sunny and clear and water was smooth as glass and very clear.

I'll post the pics when I clear the camera.
Mike- I have more photos for the lake index to give you. My previous photos
didn't make it on the site when it was upgraded.

Lake Cushman has an excellent trout bite right now. Check it out,you won't
be disapointed.

Hey Kev nice report and glad you got into some fish. Do you know if Staircase is closed?

Staircase I believe opens up June 1st. I tried it last year one day after the opener and the water was high and fast and dirty . Pretty difficult to fish the nice spots. I seem to have better luck later in the summer after the water has dropped a bit. Tight lines.......

Nice to hear about the smallmouth -- didn't know there were any smallies in there. It's about the time of year for good fishing for the largemouth though. I have done real well there about the middle of june when the spawn is on. Think the spawn is later there because of the elevation and the depth of the lake. Tight lines, BJ

I believe that opening for staircase is June 6th, along with all other previously closed rivers and streams.

Thanks fellas...it was a blast and I'll be back up here very soon.
Bob,I totally agree with the bass spawn. This lake takes a while to warm up but I wonder
if since its much colder,if the bass have a longer life span here. I don't know but these are questions that
bog my mind. lol

KevinB Those were no Brookies you caught. they were Dolly Varden which are very closely related to Brook trout however, they grow quite a bit larger. These fish are protected and need to be released unharmed. That's awesome that you caught one. there are many in the lake that will grow to 15 or more pounds.
