I arrived at the lake around the cottonwood bay area about 6pm. I was able to do some 'passive' fishing while I got the boat uncovered for the weekend. After about the first week in July I can set a worm on the bottom right off of the dock and catch 3 bull head cat fish for every 1 small mouth bass. I am learning that this is not true this time of year. I did have some luck though, right at dusk I noticed my pole getting some action, so I grabbed my rod, and missed what ever it was. 1 min later, same action on the rod tip, grabbed, set and caught. At first I thought it was a northern pike minnow (squaw fish) because of its very sluggish action, but then I saw that it looked more like a pickerel. I only have the one picture, but am still up in the air as to whether it is a medium large grass pickerel or a baby northern pike.

Plese Advise,

Thanks

Matt

Post the picture in the forum if you can and let some of the experts on this site see if they can tell. Frankly, I find the young NP and the larger GP hard to tell apart. LOL

Oops, I thought the PIC was added but it must not have attached, I will see what I can do.

I'm no expert, but it looks like a small Tiger Muskie. I fished that lake 4 years ago at the end of July and couldn't keep the smallies off the hook. It didn't matter what I used, just as long as it moved.

i cant really see the fish but my guess would be that it is a pike. Do you know what the water temp was? what side of the lake were you fishing? at cda you can catch some big largemouths and huge pike in the chain lakes. if you ever have time try blue lake. Very good fishing

It is a small tiger muskie, did you catch it on CDA or Hauser lake. There should not be any in CDA lake. Fear no Fish

Ya I caught one that looked like that but I think its a pike not a tiger muskie because most of the little pike i catch in cda look like that. I went on Google images and i compared and I think it is a pike! wait until u tie up with a 15 pounder! thats the best!

It looks to me like you caught a young Tiger Muskie. The Northern Pikeminnow actually doesn't look anything like the NP. Here's a link to a picture of the N.Pikeminnow my girlfriend caught.
