Went to Deep Lake Saturday morning. Showed up at 8 am when the park opened. Fished off the bottom about 18-24 inches, using mallows and salmon eggs, and different colors of power bait. We saw lots of fish rising all around us, but we could not attract them at all. Obviously the fish were going for the flies, but what could I have used or done differently since I am not a fly fisherman? All in all it was a great morning. I got my wife out to fish so that was a good thing. It started to get a little dark and sprinkling about 1130 so we took off. We went to the Green over at Kanaskat to check it out. Saw lots of people fishing but no fish, water was still too high.

on the 6th, I was at Kanaskat and we caught a number of beautiful rainbows off just a worm and hook. we would through a bobber out and let it drift into a quiet pool and then slowly reel it in. the other thing I had luck with was casting a heavy weight into the little pools with a worm on it off the bottom. these are small and not keepers though.

For deep lake, when it warms up I have found you need to cast much further out to get the fish on the bottom to bite. When you are seeing the surface like crazy, a bobber to keep your bait suspended more towards the surface is good.

I have seen the Deep Lake trout bite best on (in this order): Orange power bait, green power bait, yellow power bait, the blended orange/yellow/green, red salmon eggs, worms, and lastly.......... corn flavored marshmellows.

good luck!

Thanks! We'll check it out. Which trail did you go on at Kanaskat?
