I am squeezing in the last few days on my home water before the arduous pre-fish of Potholes.
The topwater bite continuse to be productive. I fished Teusday evening with my 2 boys and all day today by myself. Teusday night it was the buzzer (5)and this morining all the way up to 10:00 am it was the froggy (6). Teusday night was Ok. I caught more fish on the spinner bait (it was pretty windy) than the buzzer but the buzz bait fish are the ones I think about when I'm laying in bed.
Mostly LM but some SM also. It continues to be the shallow water with sparse pads although they are not so sparse anymore and that is what made me bust out kermit (Bronzeye Frog) this morning. I found a ton of vacant SM beds and a few with males gaurding. Big fish are definitely fewer and farhter in between. I only caught one LM today over 4 and a couple over 3. If you wanted to take a kid or your dad or wife out to catch some bass now is the time. It is definitely a numbers game. Baits really aren't that critical in catching fish right now. I think you could literally catch fish on any kind of plastic you wanted and most running baits as well. Most of the water I fished was in the mid 60's. The 1-2 lb. SM are almost a nuisance. I am taking all 3 of my monkeys out tomorrow and really looking forward to it. The fish in the pictures are by no means monster but we had a friendly debate going on in the public forum on whether or not top water baits would produce in 60 degree water. Please don't take this wrong...it's just photographic evidence

Good job on the fish and no they aren't monsters but very nice fish. I haven't been getting big numbers on top yet but they have been hitting on top ocassionaly. Long is my home lake too and I really do enjoy it. Good luck on Potholes.

DC Is the idea that the warmer the water the less they hit the top, I always thought it was the exact opposite! I have never had a fish hit a buzz bait though, I will have to give it a try again I guess.

davejay- This time of year I launch at the Spokane House launch... I refer to it as the wild waters launch because of the heavy current in the spring but right now it is golden.

Bamofban- I'm sorry if I gave you the impression that they will become less agressive towards the topwater as the water warms. They should become more aggresssive towards the topwater as temps increase. I think that can be overstated however and there is a lot of misconception of when topwater baits become productive. I think they are productive when the fish are agressive. Sometimes they are aggresive when the water is warm and sometimes when the water is cool. I don't believe in any hard and fast rules when it comes to fish. Wifes for sure, fish no. My topwater bait selection revolves more around the type of cover I am fishing rather than water temps. When I fish around wood and open water I like the buzzer and a walk the dog type bait such as a Spook or Sammy. In the slop I like the hollow body frogs and soild body frogs.
