Well I wasn't sure what rating to give this day as I didn't catch any of my target species. The whole day was spent running from spot to spot trying to locate actively feeding trout. I started my day just after 5:00am and concentrated on the middle section of the Lake between I-90 and Evergreen Point. In total I caught 6 kokanee which were all under the current 12" minimum size restriction. Three were between the 520 bridge and Evergreen Point and the other three came on the West end of the I-90 bridge. My partner had one take down that removed his lure on the initial strike, don't use 6lb test with downriggers on this lake! The kokanee were up top in the morning and down to 45' in the afternoon. The surface temps were on the high side and varied between 69 and 73 degrees, the algae looks to have clumped so it shouldn't be much longer before the water clears. So what didn't work for me this day? Herring, whole and plug cut, mini hoochies, apex spoons/lures and flashlites with a spinner. The kokes liked the Apex and the hoochies and it didn't seem to matter if they were trolled fast or slow. Come July 1st the 12" minimum size restriction is off and these guys will be hitting my cooler! The picture is of the cooler PSA used to store the fish weighed in for their derby. Winning fish was an ounce shy of 3lbs, a fair sized fish but we know bigger fish are out there! One note: there are a ton of post spawn stickleback floating in the lake which should fatten up the predatory fish over the next week or so.

Both Apex and hoochies where 1.5" long and had a bit of orange color in them. Normally I stick with silver or white but the spawning stickleback gave me the idea using orange. Both lures will catch kokanee in any lake including American Lake. I fished it earlier this year, too early it seems, but I'll try it again come August and September when they get some size to them and get ready to spawn. If your into kokes check out Bill Herzogs article in May's STS on Flaming Gorge, lots of good general info. As for the Puke, I'll probably forgo the opener as the pinks will be in thick closer to home.

From July 1st through November 30th trout in Lake Washington fall under the State's general rules which are no minimum size. This means any koke under 15" is legal to keep during that time.
