I'm a trout guy...I've got it down...if there's trout in the water, I'm taking some home to eat. I've tried bass from time to time and usually come up short. That is until today! I was a camp counselor at my church's kid's camp this week and one of the activities was "canoeing". We'll being that this was a church camp, our cabin theme was "Fishers of Men". So I just happened to have all this fishing gear for "decoration". We went to Lake Morton for our canoe adventure and I knew from the reports that it held some bass. The kids went out on the canoes and I stayed on shore to set up their poles. At first I went for trout, but I also rigged up a couple of poles with rapalas. I also brought for decoration one of my kids 1st fishing poles, a zebco push button, that had a purple plastic worm with flakes. I believe it was Texas rigged weedless? (slip sinker-worm w/ big hook turn into it) It hasn't been used in 2 yrs. Anyways, we were catching a bunch of dinks (LMB) from shore, and I noticed the weirdest thing. Bass were jumping! Never seen this before in my life....they were eating flies or baitfish right on top of the water. So I cast a rapala into the feeding frenzy and landed two 8-10 inch fish on the same lure! Crazy!! I spotted some lillys across the way, and figured what the heck. I hopped into a canoe with 4 kids (scary), and we paddled over there. I was casting the rapala and noticed a sunken log was right in front of the lillys. This looked like a bass crack house..so I grabbed the zebco from one of the kids and said "I bet I catch one on the 1st cast" I threw that worm in front of the log, and watched my line start to move before it hit the bottom...I did a professional hook set like the guys on t.v. and bang! Fish on. It was AWESOME....there were 2 fish right there by that log. I figured on was a male and the other a female. The crazy thing is one was not leaving the other's side even as I was fighting it. I fought the fish for about 3-5 minutes...got it in the boat and I'd say it was about 3.5 lbs....maybe more, but I don't want to ruin a good story by exaggerating. My first bass over 12 inches! She went about 18-20 inches and fat as all get out. I know it was a hen cuz she was all fat where a female would be.

I would like to thank all the guys who post their bass reports on here, I read them all the time and feel like I know enough to make my own luck. I've read on here how to watch for your line to move and when to set the hook and even had another member toss me a good bass lure (Bassin Bomber who also told me *bleep* trout) I'd say that maybe these fish were protecting a bed, but I don't know when they spawn....I don't know anything about bass. I will say this, the fish in Lake Morton are HUNGRY! I'll be back and hopefully with the same success, I doubt I could ever duplicate a day like this, we were in the boat for all of 15 minutes before I caught that fish, and my whole cabin saw me land it and went back telling all the other campers how we caught fish. Right on, Rob!!!!! If I can't convert you, I'll at least add bass to your species to target list. :) Kudos to you for taking the time to support kids at camp too. Lord willing, let's hook up some time.

Rob G. have not heard from you in awhile. GREAT REPORT! Your reports are always entertaining. That was cool too that it happened when you were with a boat/canoe load of kids.

Yes, this lake holds quite a few quality bass as reports would leave you to believe. I have found fishing is best in spring when they load the lake with trout and in the fall, although there have been some great hooksets the rest of the year too. Mike Carey can attest to a great bass-looking lake that you can not catch a nibble in (Sorry for outing you Mike). I have been the receiver of many fishless trips here too! TONS of small LMB's though, just throw a twin tail grub and you can not beat them off of your hook.
