After a hot sleepless night, I was up at 4 AM. Got the coffee on and gear ready and got Mike out of bed at 4:30. After a quick breakfast we headed out to Kitsap Lake. When we arrived at the County Park access and I was surprised to see no cars or trailers there. The lake looked beautiful, flat as a mirror and dead calm. It was just daylight and the sun was still a promise from the east. The temperature was still quite cool -- a nice break from the hot temperatures of late. We launched and ran up the lake to one of my favorite stretches of shoreline on the east side. I was quite surprised to see so many weeds and so much algae. I usually fish the lake earlier in the year. I was casting Rapalas but it was too weedy to fish them effectively. I tried jigs around the docks but they too were gathering lots of weeds. I tried spinnerbaits and they were better but still picked up some weeds. I tried Texas rigged worms and the worked but didn't find any fish. Mike started with a popper but soon switched to a frog - and pretty much stuck to that lure. He had a nice strike but the fish missed the lure. A short while later, he had a smashing surface strike and this nice 3 pounder just ate the frog. The fish was landed with the video shooting. He was admired and released. The fish seemed to be very healthy but had a sharp bone protruding from his anus. We were going to help him out a bit by removing it but it was solid so he was released to solve his own problem. That fish was the last of the action. And, yes, after Mike caught the 3 pounder I did tie on a frog. Mike got some more video of the lake. We decided it was time for the next lake -- Wildcat.
