Got a wild hair and ran to Potholes resevoir for some multi-species fishing! Haven't been over there in about 10 years! Got to Mar-Don Resort at about 9am and got a camp site and a bite to eat then launched around 10:30am. Needless to say it was hot! Unfortunately just the weather and not the fishing. I was told at the Mar-Don store to hit the Dunes and look for beaver dams and throw a chartruese and white spinnerbait....something I thought was more of a pre-spawn pattern during higher water conditions, but oh well, I figured I would give it a shot and hop I wasn't being baited into buying one of the 700 chartruese and white spinnerbaits hanging on the wall?! lol

I fished all my usual smallmouth spots first with only small nibbles to show for my efforts. Then I fished out in front of the State Park boat launch before heading back into the dunes at that end for largemouth...still nothing?

The water level is way down, and negotiating the dunes was tricky, thank goodness for gps tracking on my Lowrance!! There was alot of back tracking and shallow water negotiating going on in there, and oh, not to mention getting attacked and dive bombed by crazy split tailed birds!!! Also, the green in the water and chunks of goo floating everywhere also indicated a recent algae bloom, and that sucks no matter where you fish! Water temps were right at 80-82 degrees.

I stayed on the water until 10pm fishing all around the State Park, the dunes at that end, the dam rock wall, around the islands in depths from 2' to 30' and didn't even catch a perch! I can't count the lures I tied on....

The only thing I hooked was at about 8:30pm and I believe it was about a 3-4lb smallie by the glimpse I got of it as it threw my buzzbait back at me.

I have N-E-V-E-R been skunked on this lake!! Maybe I should have bought the spinnerbait? Or maybe I should have followed my gut and stayed out of the dunes this time of year?

So much for day one, would there be a day 2 was the question now, or should I just pull up stakes and head for Moses lake??
