Arrived at Swafford and got on the water around 6:00am. Air temp was right around 55F, water temp was around 68F, mostly cloudy and wind was from the west at 5 mph. Water was typical for Swafford, dirty (algae bloom) and full of milfoil, with an exception of a few areas...seems to be getting much worse since the last time I was there.

Since this was Allison's first time on the water from a float tube...I really didn't care if we caught much of anything at all. I was more interested in her getting comfortable with the float tube and spending some time with her. Didn't catch any trout, but caught three LMB that had combined length and weight of 12" and just under half a pound. Had an interesting day....left the water around 3:00.

That tube will be a lot more comfortable (and safe) for her if you put a tension rod in the front of the tube. It helps hold it open and will prevent it from folding up in the event it loses air - definitely more stable. 3/4" PVC from any hardware store should work great and will only set you back a few bucks at the most :)

Thanks, AaronE! I get the idea behind the tension rod...but one thing that makes me kinda nervous would be getting trapped without an unrestricted exit point. The tube does have a two-inch webbing that runs from one side to the other, is adjustable, and holds it open (while inflated, that is). I don't think it would do much in the event of a catastrophic deflation from hitting something or whatever. She was having a heck of a time with the tube with regards to keeping up with me and my pontoon. Spent most of my time rowing in circles around her or tying off with my anchor rope and towing her. I picked up a fairly decent pontoon for her, so hopefully that will work out a little better. Thanks!
