The fishing was terrible. I have been fishing all around american lake every saturday since june 2009, but i have only caught one rainbow trout. I suggest that you avoid bottom fishing (unless it is a hot day, thats where the trout will usually be) bucause you will get nothing but rock bass.

Seems like I catch one or two trout almost every outing at American Lake on plastic worms or crawfish imitating crankbaits while fishing for Smallmouth.

are your fishing from a boat,if so try trolling some repalas the ones that are about an inch long.i use the ones that look like a trout or a perch and dive from 3 to 6 feet.trout are surface fish in the mornings and evenings. try it and see how it works, good luck

The trout hold out deeper when it's hot and sunny(trout prefer water temps in the low 60's or lower). If you have a fish finder, just find the holes and drops where they're holding, and drift across them mooching a worm with a shrimp egg just above the bottom(or drop shot a worm). This time of year the trout could be as deep as 90'(at least the bigger ones). But usually you can find them in 30-50'. If you dont have a fish finder, then it's just trial and error finding the holes. I've spent alot of time drifting around that lake, feeling out the bottom, looking for holes. It's the skiers and pwc's that make it tough to get to the deeper holes. We were out on American yesterday, and it went from silent calm in the morning to choppy mayhem in no time. The fishing will get better soon when the water cools back down. Now is a great time to break out the mayhem gear, set up a drop shot rig, and have some fun with the spiny rays. There's alot of big perch in American(2#+ have been taken recently), and smallies are always fun to catch(and release), and even the rock bass get enormous there, and are good eating fish.

Wow, somehow the spell check replaced the words ultra light, with the word mayhem. It is ultra light gear, not mayhem gear that I was refering to.......
