WOW Two trips to RW in one week. (Fri & today)
The bite was slow but fish were caught. Once again Cindy catches the biggest fish (@7# 4oz) but I got to release several before I kept my limit.
We launched at the corp launch at Chief Joe dam at 0730. It was 17 degrees at the launch site (49 when we took out). the water temp was at 65 degrees. It was a beautiful run up river to the lowermost pens with tendrils of fog rising from the water and the sunrise over the mountains. Saw a coyote, but no deer this trip. Reached the Pens area, and there was a light current. We fished without much luck until around 0900 or so. We released a few small (2-3#) fish, but could see larger ones chase the lures. We used plastics (B-2 squid, minnow imitations, tails of plastic craws), black marabou jigs, wooly-bugger type flies, and my rendition of the famed pellet fly. I found out size is important, the trout woud "buzz" and lip my size 10 flies, but when we switched to a size 12, the bite was on. We only caught 5 on the pellet fly, but two of those were boated and another larger fish came off. It seemed the B-2 would stir the trout up, and they would swat it but only had two hook ups on the B-2 the whole time out. For us it seemed the fish were most active from 8-10 ft below the surface, It was a beautiful day on the water.
By the way, Aaron You got yourself a beautiful Boat, very nicely set up. It was nice to see You and Mike (I didn't catch your friends name). Hope you had a great time.

Hello Jacob,
For the trout, the daily limit is two (2) fish. Catch and Release until the limit is kept is possible if a person doesn't use bait or scent and the fish isn't hooked in the gills or eye or tongue. Read the regulations on the Rufus Woods resevoir for a more detailed account. I like to pinch the barbs on the hooks, and I use jigs most of the time, so most all of the fish are lip hooked. Occassionally one will be hooked in such a way I put him in the livewell, but most of them are released in good order to fight another day.
As this is only my style of fishing (artificial lures and barbless), there will be other opinions out there which will differ, so gather info and enjoy your outings.
Thanks for the question.

hiya loui
glad to see you're still able to coax these fish into biting. i know it's been tough there lately. i'm assuming you're not fly fishing, so i was wondering if you've had any luck using the "wiggle fin" or disc in front of your flies or just trolling them 'au natural'. the disc worked well for us earlier in the year, but not so much lately. thanks in advance

Hi ya Dave.
Actually we jig them. For the flies, we will put a splitshot about a foot up the line, or carolina rig them. I have the wiggle fin discs in the boat, but just haven't tried them yet. I've seen others catch fish using them, so I gotta get them in the water.
We just seem comfortable with the jigging, and at the pens it seems the jig is a good way to get the lure down below the nets.
Look forward to your reports.
Stay safe
