I took a couple of rainy hours and fished Lake Cavanaugh today. There appeared to be 3 other boats fishing but only one other trailer in the parking lot. The other two, I would guess are locals with places on the lake. I did not put any fish in the box but I did have a good few hours of fishing. I started out trolling a number of flies, transitioning to some form of dodger and various flies, then a dodger and wedding band combo. I fished various locations and depths, surface to about 56 feet. The surface temperature was 42.1-42.3 degrees and there was evidence of a recent hatch.
Two things seemed to work, a dark green # 8 Woollybugger about 20” behind a dodger produced two significant take downs with the rigger running at 56’. I lost both before they saw the net. The other successful offering was a long shot but it worked. I removed the hook from a Canadian Wonder spoon. Then tied a # 18 pink scud about 16” behind the CW spoon. This offering produced consistent action for small kokanee when run 50-60 feet behind the release clip and the rigger at 8-12’ down. The kokanee were 6-8” and all returned to the lake unharmed.
