Completed the electrical system rewire on my boat early Sunday morning so with a few hours to kill, headed for Lake Stevens. Usually I would gear up for kokanee and trout but I figured that I would switch things up a bit and fish smallmouth…should have stuck with the kokanee! Circumnavigated the lake looking for fish and it was a dessert. We found a few fish holding along the northwest shore in about 40-50’ of water. Worked purple or root beer colored Senkos rigged either as a Carolina rig or drop shot with very limited success. I had 1 bite but didn’t hook it. I am just expanding my fishing resume to include bass fishing and have very limited knowledge so I figure that one bite was good.

I was very surprised, we metered the entire periphery of the lake trying to focus on depths ranging from 10’ to about 40’and rechecking various structure that we located. With the exception of metering a few fish on the NW shore, the lake was completely devoid of life.

On a positive note, my efforts in rewiring the boat were very successful. I have absolutely zero electrical interference or noise on my Humminbird FF and the electrical system has the appropriate circuit protection.

What type of interference were you experiencing? When I run my big motor, my Huminbird screen fills with fish!. Turn it of and the fish disappear. Start the kicker, nothing appears on the screen, but then the kicker is not connected to the boats electrical system.

How is the Kokanee fishing this time of year?

I am familiar with the “fish while running issue” but in my case the electrical interference was primarily due to ESD from my electric trolling motor. To address the extra fish, for my boat/transducer setup I found that the depth and placement of the transducer was critical in reducing the extra fish. I run the QuadraBeam PLUS transducer and knew that placement was critical so I started out using the portable or suction cup transducer mount. My plan was to install the hard mount once I established where the ideal mounting location should be. In reality the portable mount works perfectly and has the benefit of being removable if I have to beach the boat so I never installed the permanent mount. On my boat there is a flat area, parallel to the water surface just inboard of the chine. If I place the transducer in this area so that it is just wetted while running I seem to eliminate most of the excess fish while running. I should probably mention that typically I do not user the fish ID feature and prefer the arches but I am familiar with your concern. I believe that the extra fish are actually surface turbulence interpreted by the fish finder as fish.

Regarding the ESD, I revised the overall power distribution by increasing wire gage and basically separating the fish finder power supply from the trolling motor. Additionally I made a point to separate the trolling motor wiring from the transducer cable.

I love to fish kokanee so the fishing is always good, that said a few are being caught at Lake Stevens and at Lake Sammash

How strange, I wonder what's up with the double reports?

What is the average size Kokanee caught this time of year on Lake Stevens? I imagine the size continues to grow into the summer?
I wonder if this post will be in triplicate? LOL
