Well I fish at palmer almost every weekend. My grandparents live in Loomis and I have been going there sence I was a kid. As you can tell, the Kokanee are bitting well for the time of year, on account that usualy it is iced over and we are ice fishing. But, here are a few things to do so you can catch nice, big, TASTY silvers.

1.Speed- You will need to be going anywere from 1-1.5 MPH to catch silvers. Any slower or faster they won't bite. (From personal experience of course)

2.Tackle- You always want to use a RED or PINK Double Wammy. With a gold shiner. With a treble hook. If you are using a black night, or meps, with a single hook. Look at bait. (number 5)

3.Down riggers- Go down about 19-22 feet. This will catch you the most fish.

4.Length of line- Go back 20 feet before you let down your downriggers.

5.Bait- Corn, On a single hook. ONLY PUT ONE PIECE OF CORN ON. Any more and the play of your wedding ring will not work. On a treble hook, LOAD it with all the corn that will fit.

6.If your not using a Down rigger- You need leaded line, most of the time you will want to go out two colors.

7.Place- TROLL ON THE NORTH SIDE OF THE LAKE. Use the boat launch to the north that is at the park, its un-missable.

When trolling you may catch an occasional nice rainbow. (They DO count against your Kokanee limit of 5 per person.)

THERE ARE MANY SPECIES OF FISH IN PALMER. So try new things and talk to locals like my grandpa Frank Mohr who fishes there almost daily.

btw If you go to Loomis a lot a couple of other nearby lakes to fish you should try are, Chopaka. (Fly fishing only) if you fly fish, it can be one heck of a lake. Also take the dirt road from Loomis towards Conconully, There is a small lake about 5 miles out of Loomis, called Connor lake. Great fish in there, and of course Blue lake.

Yes, I agree. Blue lake is a great lake to fish. Fish lake is quite overgrown now but if you are willing it has some actualy tasty rainbows. (It is out the "game farm" it's the dirt road you are talking about (also some great spotlighting out their for coyotes and bobcats. If you enjoy hunting. ) Fish lake is the first lake after Connors.
I'll keep updating Palmer. Hope you guys have some amazing fishing trips. And if your already at Loomis. Take a drive up to nighthawk. One of the smallest, coolest little towns you will see.

PS: There are two blue lakes up there (By Loomis). One is up past Wannacut. That blue lake has some GREAT Cut throat fishing. You can actually catch them from the shore. And the other is out the game farm that has some nice trout fishing.

Do you ever fish for anything in the lake other than the kokanee? I am very interested in fishing this lake for perch, crappie, and bass... but also trout. I have never fished it but would really like to find out good tips and places to fish about this lake.

Good question. Yes. I fish for Perch, largemouth, Smallmouth, And if you are willing Ling.

My favorite place for the Perch is on the North side bye the BIG rock bluffs. Quite simple to find. (If you dont have a boat.) there is a little "cove" about a half a mile out the highway (from the south) right before you start getting to the houses)
Tackle for perch- 1 oz weight at the end og the line. about a foot up a single hook. and about 1 foot above that another single.
Use a half of a nice sized crawler. hit the bottom. and tighten your line. Then wait. (At about 50 ft of water.)

LG- All around the lake really EXEPT at the launches h a red number 4 single hooked through it.
SM- Same thing.

Crappie- Never really fish for them

Ling- North side at about 90 ft of water. Night time is the best. 2 ounce chartrouche jig. Wih some chicken liver. (Live bait is not allowed here)

I also use Rattle Traps near the lily pads for Small and Large mouth and a Fat GitZit tube (various colors- I prefer dark) near the rock slides. Good results.

If the big ones are not biting much, you can always toss on a Rooster Tail (black/ silver spoon) to catch the smaller ones.

Also have had decent results pulling a wacky rigged worm through, and around, the lily pads.
