Ok, I finally have a few minutes to post this report.

Last week was a wonderful time spent vacationing with the family at Lake Chelan for a day and then on to Rufus Woods Lake. We fished all day on Wednesday at Chelan for those denizens of the deep, the 'elusive' Lake Trout. Well it was for us anyways, we never had so much as a take-down. Trolled the Ace Hi-Fly with herring and two colors of flatfish lures just off of the bottom in the popular areas. Guess it just wasn't meant to be for us this trip! Anyhow, we packed up and headed to Rufus Woods on Thursday morning and arrived at Cabin By The River around 11:00 a.m. where we stayed for two nights. A very pleasant experience. The owners are very nice people and saved the week for us when I happened to notice that my kicker motor was hanging low in my rear-view mirror. I jumped out and went behind the boat to find that my motor bracket bolts on top had broken off and the motor was dangling by the safety cable that held it on to the transom! Fortunately, since I didn't have any spare bolts I asked the owners of the cabin if they could help and one of the relatives living nearby came over with just what was needed. WHEW! I thought I was going to have to troll with the 115 hp main motor, and that just doesn't work when you want to troll SLOW.

Ok, now on to the fishing report: We (my lovely wife and my son and I) fished near the lower pens for the two days we were there and managed to land a total of 7 trout between 3 and 7 lbs. The biggest fish, the one pushing 7 lbs. nailed my black wooley bugger as I was making the proverbial 'last pass' before heading back to the cabin on Friday evening. I was trolling parallel to the shore just above the lower pens when suddenly my Abel TR-1 reel began screaming as the line peeled off the spool from the first run. The fish fought hard on my 3 weight flyrod and took about 5 minutes to get it to the boat! What a great way to end a very nice fishing trip.

Attached are a couple of pictures of some of the fish caught.

WOW flyfisherguy, That was quite the Vacation. Good report, and great fish. I'm glad you were able to take home a respectable RW Trout. Sounds like you guys were getting it figured out. A seven pounder on a 3 weight is a good workout, How was the "Cabin" experience? Thanks for the report and pics

SWEEET job FFG! I was out there too...come to think of it, I did see a couple of guys doing the fly casting thing from a deep 'V' boat...don't know if that was you or not. In fact when I was there about a month ago, there was a Trophy w/ guys fly fishing on board too....hmmmmm...maybe you guys are starting something new!

Hi Loui! Thanks again for all of your help and generosity. It was great seeing you and Cindy, looking forward to our next meeting! The cabin was pretty ok, lol. Nothing fancy but very convenient and close to the fishing. There is a very friendly dog that comes to greet you every time you come back to the cabin, I almost took her home with us! lol By the way, on the way home we passed by Lake Lenore and a guy was reeling in a huge Lahotan cutthroat. After begging the family to give me fifteen minutes to cast a fly I managed to have a quick hookup that came off almost as quickly. I WILL BE BACK THERE!

Take care my friend!

Hiya mav, it looks like from your reports that you are really dialed in to those big Rufus 'bows! Unfortunately since I live in Vancouver, a 7.5 hour drive from RW pulling my boat, I didn't have enough time to try out all of my "secret weapons" in the two days that we were there. But I will probably be back there in the future and at least I now have a clue as to what will take fish. We sure had a great time (at least I did!) and the family all caught fish. Just finished taking some of the catch out of the smoker and....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!!! Delicious! Tight lines!
