This day I fished the headwaters of the Yakima for Brookies. I only got one brookie, and a bunch of RB, but that's another story..

As an afterthought, I headed up to Lost Lake. It was pretty much dusk when I got there. The surface was full of rises, and even more pleasing was the fact the the rises were repeat and in a beat. I cast out a parachute ant as far as I could, but did not get a response. By this time it was dark and I tied on a bead head black wooley bugger and made big strips, as if I were fishing for browns after dark in the Columbia Basin. Just that easy I picked up a couple of brookies-7" and 9".

Knowing that brookies have no problem populating themselves in a lake like this, I kept these two for my Sunday night dinner. I cracked open their stomachs and what I found (for this time of the year) was mainly strips of bark that were about a millimeter long and a size 22 snail. That was it. These guys don't have much to eat. Obviously. They're eating bark! Who knows, the fish were rising quite a bit when I got there, so maybe the bark is whats left after a caddis or mayfly case has been digested. I'll be back as soon as this Friday or Saturday if the lake is not COMPLETELY frozen over.

Brookies on the fly...nice.
