What a day! Got up at 12:30 am (after a very long day at work and a trip to the casino for an awards thing) were launched and in the water at about 2:30. Chatted it up at the dock for a couple hours so and then headed out onto the lake. The first rig in gets hit immediately and we’re thinking it will be an easy day…wrong. Based on pre-fishing my game plan was to fish, targeting larger fish with gear that seemed to consistently produce the big boys. Although we did catch some nicer fish our numbers were way down and we fell short of limits. In hind sight we should have made a move and just fished to catch fish but I was looking for the whopper or something equivalent to last week’s big one. As the day progressed we fished a variety of setups but overall I was committed to the one big fish and I stuck to some custom tied rigs that had previously been very successful. All our bigger fish, including last weeks big fish were caught on my spin-n-glow rigs. On derby day the fish seemed to be partial to the dodger attractors and not the swing blades. We were having idling problems and that may have had something to do with the dodger vs. swing blade observation. My electric trolling motor battery needs to be replaced so we had to rely on the big motor. It chose yesterday to cough and sputter on us and not idle well, I had just filled the tank and it may have been bad gas, or maybe I need to do a tune-up.

Anyway, we had a great time; the derby was well organized and went very smoothly. Hats off to the promoters, the volunteers and all the fisherman. The ramp lines, both in and out were not bad and everybody was prepared and courteous. The actual fishing went well also. Everybody seemed to be aware of other fishermen’s boat direction and gave way when you had a fish on. I think that there was an incident over by the aerator pen but I didn’t pay attention until I heard the yelling so I don’t know what happened. The derby staff was in force at the ramp, there to help direct traffic and help out where needed. I am looking forward to next years event and in the meantime will have to practice, practice and practice some more.

Nice report, wish I could have made it there sooner and caught the whole thing. Well I really wish I could have made it out to fish but maybe next time. When I have a little more knowledge under my hat. Practice dose make perfect plus trying to get the big one always clouds the mind. Ive had that drouble during the Everett coho derby but mine was not using gear long enough. It also makes it hard when the water is hit hard before. I talked to a few boats that entered and had no luck at all. Happy fishing and tight lines

Quad, where on the forum are you saying there is a vid. link? Buy the way is that video link? rseas, would you describe Sat. as a tough day of catching? And are you willing to say how big your Kokanee have been? Thanks for the report, If I am understanding, your fishing began in the dark?

For us Saturday was tough, I did talk to a number of people that did well. I stuck to my plan to target big fish and I should have just fished to catch fish, my fault more than the fishing was off. Saturday our largest fish was 1.09 pounds. So far this year our biggest Lake Stevens kokanee was a little over 2 pounds. We started fishing in the dark and caught a few fish but on Saturday I don’t think that there was any advantage to fishing in the dark.

Thanks for sharing. Nice fish for sure. When fishing in the dark, how important is it that your gear glow? And, does your fishing depth change much from dark to daylight?

We just bought one of the flashy things (Men in Black) basically a camera flash attachment and so far have not noticed a significant difference in our nocturnal catch rate. To be honest I try to avoid fishing in the dark any more. I do think that as summer approaches and the water warms the thermocline and fish will move deeper. I figure the flashy thing will be more effective as the fish go deeper.
