An amazing two days at this lake. Caught wild rainbows, a limit, fishing from a fallen log on the north west side of the lake. There were lots of people out fishing, but plenty of fish to go around. My brother was casting a fly, my dad threw a spinner, we trolled for a bit, but the fish really wanted power bait on the bottom. These wilde fish could really fight, our biggest was 21.5 inches, but it fought like a steelie. Four pound test line with power bait on about a six foot leader works best. This little lake is a treasure. There's not very much shore access, so bring a machete if your planning to not boat it, but the fish appreciate the extra effort of bushwhacking through to the perfect spot. Lots of little newts that are actually pretty good fighters if you fish a worm on the bottom. Caught a couple little guys that way.

How many total fish did you catch. Assuming you camped for two days, how close to the lake could you set up camp, considering the heavy brush surrounding the little lake? Looks to be a secluded setting with rough boat ramp.

If those newts are what I am thinking they are, dark brown- orange bellied? They are extremely poisonous, fyi. Taricha Granulosa aka rough skinned newts. Thanks for the report, my ears perked up about newts, I heart them.

We caught a total of two limits. You're only allowed two fish over 15 inches here, and it's worth it, because we caught more than our limit of those. There are some nice places to camp around there, off the roads rather, but we didn't camp, we went home for the night and the fishing was so good we came back with the kayak. But there were some people setting up camp across the lake, they boated over to a primitive site that's been made. The newts are soo cool, I've kept them in fish tanks before for a while and fed them night crawlers. They get really friendly and beg for food like fish. I dunno about them being poisonous, but I wouldn't eat them! Also, there are baby beavers swimming around slapping the water. I got a kick outta them trying to scare us away, they're like fuzzy little river kittens.

Found this: "The rough-skinned newt possesses tetrodotoxin, which in this species was formerly called tarichatoxin. This toxin binds to sodium channels in nerve cells and interferes with the normal flow of sodium ions in and out of the cell. This has the effect of inducing paralysis and death."
It is illegal to keep them, fyi.
Thanks for the report however, Stump has some big bass too.
