I had to go into Manson on Thursday morning, so I put in the fishing rod and my bobber box with some jigs to try a few casts at a couple of the local lakes. On the way home from Manson I stopped off at the northern most end of Wapato to try for a crappie. The area is basically a small pond, since it has been closed off from the main body of the lake by cattails and toulles. Years ago (15 or so) there was a narrow channel through the rushes that connected them, but now there is no way to boat between them. The shore access is basically nonexistant, and the water weeds and moss has all but taken over. I tried to jig, but the weed growth was within 3 feet or so of the surface and the retrieve was too fast to get any hits. Rigged up a slip bobber with 1/16 oz jig and set the bobber around 20-24 inches. Woluld cast to the open areas then slow retreive. Caught several crappie and a few LMB, all of which were about 6-7 inches long. It was cloudy with strong breeze. I had to get on with my day, so I was happy to hook up with anything. I called it good, and headed on home with a stop by Roses along the way.

I'm sure you had a nice time Loui,,, but maybe it's just me.... It's just not the same seeing that little crappie in your pic. as it is seeing your usual 5-10lb Rufus pigs. (-:

LOL. it is the other end of the spectrum isn't it. But if I were to have a choice between the Rufus Pigs and a chance to catch some "NICE" pan fish, it would be the panfish hands down. I grew up fishin the lil buggers and I enjoy the fight they put up when on the end of your line,and The crappies are a thrill for me to pull in. Don't get me wrong, the RW pigs are a blast too, and i love to eat/smoke them, and I don't turn down any opportnities to go, but the panfish have a special place in this fishermans heart. Hey now I know were to drop a line! I stayed at Wapato point last summer and drove all around those lakes back there and got pretty discuraged not finding good access or docks.

Hello Canoeingit, Lack of shore access is a frustrating issue at these local lakes, but by being flexable and looking around, it is usually possible to wet a line early in the season. As the weather warms and more people start getin out to the lakes, it can sure be a challenge. Wishing you good luck on your future outings.
