Decided to try out Sammamish this morning after a lot of kokanee fishing of late. Got to the lake around 6:30am and we were fishing by 7:00am. Ran up to the aerator first thing and trolled at 20 and 40 feet right off the point there running wedding ring/dodger combos. Winner of the day was an orange wedding ring with brass 3.5 blade and half a night crawler. We only managed 2 cutts up by the aerator, both small, and hooked a perch suspended in 20 feet of water in an 80 foot deep hole. Kinda strange, but wierder things have happened. The weather was wonderful, sun all day, light breeze, and not to much boat traffic till after 11am. We went back down toward the mouth of the creek to finish our day and ended up getting bit, and ticked off!! Trolled past the point down there and my downrigger got SLAMMED at 20 ft down, popped me off the downrigger and BURRIED my pole instantly. Heard a splash out behind the boat and looked back, didn't see the fish jump but heard the loud splash and saw the wake come off, it was big! Grabbed the rod and to my dismay the fish nailed my gear so hard it just snapped right through my 6 lb flourocarbon P-line leader right in the middle, not even a knot failure. My buddy and I were both pretty bummed after the slow fishing we had experienced all morning. Trolled about 20 minutes more and my pole burried AGAIN! I grabbed the rod, got two good head shakes and then it unbottoned on me..... trolled back to the launch and quit for the day. This was the thrid time this year I have lost a real pig out at Sammamish and it is getting aggravating! First time the line broke though, that was very surprising. Overall wonderful day on the water.

Oh man you should have switched to a higher line after that first big hit. Too bad though

I experienced the same issues with 6lb flourocarbon leaders when fishing in Lake Washington and Lake Sammamish with downriggers. If I were to venture a guess, they were resident chinook. I haven't caught one in Lake Sammamish, but I'm sure they are in there. When they take your lure there is no bump, the rod tip just gets wet and the reel sings. Last resident chinook I brought to the boat weighed over 8lbs. I now run at least 8lb leader when hooked up to the downriggers and haven't experienced a break-off on the strike since.

Yeah, the friend I was fishing with is a long time local and he has fished the lake for years and caught resi chinookers out of there before, we kind of were thinking to ourselves that might have been way it was.

Cody, the second time the line didn't break, the fish just came loose before I had much of a chance to fight him.

Snake, yessir, the docks were completely submerged. Not too much of an issue with my 16' aluminum, but I saw plenty of people having fun with other vessels! LOL!

I have had bad luck with p-line. As for flourocarbon, I don't go lower than 8#. Otherwise you might as well use regular mono if you go lower. The stuff is just too brittle. Thanks for the report.

That's a great report Matt. Thanks! Sammamish has some great treasures. I don't know what those 2 fish were that you hooked and lost... but that's the one cool thing about losing big fish that you didn't get to see --- you become more curious about what it was and it keeps you going back! My guess..... a large rainbow trout. I caught a 25 inch Rainbow last year that almost ran away with my fully spooled reel of 4lb test line. Another possibility is that your line got wacked by a large smallmouth or Largemouth bass. There are largemouth in that area you were fishing. If you were close to shore you might have raised their curiousity as well. I would think a resident chinook would be in the wide open of the lake at this time of year down deep. Better luck next time on that!!
