We gathered up the usual kokanee gear and hit Lake Samish for a few hours this morning. There were 7 or 8 rigs in the parking lot when we arrived and two boats ahead of us in the launch line. Once launched we started fishing almost immediately and it seemed that there were schools of kokanee everywhere. The thermocline was unstable and nonexistent in a number of areas. The surface temperature was 58-60 degrees. We were metering fish everywhere at depths from about 18’ to 65’. We caught fish at various places throughout the lake. We fished both the large and small end of the lake. Although we caught fish on everything we sent over the side the fish defiantly preferred my hand made flash, pink and purple wedding ring spinners. We fished a flat line rod at 35 pulls, 1 off the downrigger at various depths and two lead line rods, 1 at 1 color and 1 at 2 colors. There did not seem to be a pattern, we caught fish all morning on everything and at every depth. We randomly tipped our offerings with corn but I am not sure it was needed. We caught many fish without and bait or scent. Final count 20 kokanee, limits for 4 people and a very nice morning on the lake.

Wow, great report. I was just wondering yesterday if anyone was catching Kokes at Samish. Were the water skiers an issue?

There were a few ski/wake board boats on the lake but we were out of the water before the bulk of the water players found their keys.

Looks to me like a dinner party, and the Kokanee are invited. In fact, they are the guest of honor! What size were the fish?

They were 9" to 12 or 13". I didn't really measure them, but some were longer and some were shorter than a 11" Seal-A-Meal bag.
