After much discussion I met up with MotoBoat/ i.e. Wayne for some fishing at Riffe lake. We headed down to target the landlock coho which have been reported on a lot lately. We started of launching from the park and launch near the dam. We sped directly across to the opposite side. I trolled a variation on a wedding ring behind a 4/0 flasher. He fished a combination of what i think was Berkley Power worms? behind a 4/0 flasher. Also he fished I think what is called a Triple Teaser, little brass looking fish behind a flasher. He had a lot of success with just dragging a chrome flasher behind the boat with a small egg sinker for weight, sometimes on this setup he had just power bait on a hook or maybe power worms and bait. We both fished downriggers also, catching fish in at depths of 7'- 20' I think. When ever I went down to 30-40' I had no fish. After a couple miles down the lake we swiched to the Southern side of the lake. Caught the majority of fish along here at only about 7-8' depth on the d.r.'s There were about 4-5 other boats out. also said they had fish in the boat. We left with 8 coho between us. Mostly 13-16" I think. One of the fish was quite airodynamic, leaping many times before coming to the boat. A few more were lost on the self release, and a few more were tossed back to grow. Our first time to this lake, so kind of learning it as we go. It is a pretty decent fishery I think, not off the charts, you had to work for the fish, but they were defenitely there for patient angler.
Sunny, rainy, Thunderstormy, windy, not windy.

Quad, I might add to watch out for floating logs scattered about. Also, chunks of floating wood and debree that will hitchhike on your fishing line. As quad mentioned, tried many things at various depths, some not so conventional, all received varried success. A good day on the lake with torrential down pours at times. A big Thanks goes out to Quad., and various WaLaker that shared tips.

Glad to hear that your trip went well, did you guys try that Bill Herzog trick with the slime? And did you mark fish with bottomfinder? Bob R

I feel like I read something about "Slime"..... did I actually read to rub your fish slime/guts on your gear?? I didn't really read that did I?
As far as marking fish....NO, my f.f. went belly up this week and I need to send it out. I absolutely had using a downrigger without a depth finder.

No slime smeared intentionally on the gear on this trip Bob. Pretty certain some found it's way onto Chris's shirt and pants though. No worries, the slime washed off during the boat filling rain squall we endured.. Chris you were one wet "fishin ho".

Quad, it's a good hint from Bill Herzog, 1st landlocked salmon you catch rub some slime (from the skin!) on your dodger or flasher , seems to convince fish that it's O.K. to eat, since the attractor is supposed to be another fish feeding. I know that the particular smelly jelly we use seems to work on other fish, makes sense since these fish have such sensitive sniffers.Bob R

Congratulations and thanks for the info. I've been trying to get down there and fish Riffe but something always seems to come up at the last minute. We had planned to fish Riffe last weekend but as it turned out we ended up fishing a short day locally. The rest of the weekend was spent getting stuff done around the house in preparation for a trip out of town. Two weeks and no fishing...!

rseas, you have got to be jonesing for a fish to slime on your gear! I have not heard of this tip have you? If you do get around to visiting this lake, just a fyi. It is a minimum of 2 1/2 hours from N. Seattle area to closest boat ramp on Riffe. Guessing your way north of my location. Figure on a long day, to get in as many hours fishing (maybe) as driving if attempting a one day outing. There are at least two campgrounds available as an overnight option.

Great grandma lives down in the area so we'll have a place to stay. Of course, I'll have to work down her to do list in exchange for the room and board... I had not heard about the fish slime thing but next time out I'll have to test it out and report back.

rseas, will Great grandma take some fish as trade? Maximize the fishing time anyway you can.
