Met up with "Soulfishhawk", AKA, James at Coulon at 0615. Launched and headed over to the S. tip of Mercer Island. We set up the downriggers with 5" flashers, light blue reflective tape. and behind the flashers were Ace HIgh Fly's green splatter back hootcie (mini squid) I like these with double hooks, or at least I add a second hook if it doesn't come with it. The f.f. is out of comission, so we just dropped our gear to 25' and 35' respectively. I think within about an hour I went to check my gear.... I did not see any play in the rod, but upon releasing the clip it was heavy, and just a few head shakes from a fish. I must have dragged the poor fish for awhile because he was pooped out upon landing him. Fish was a 17" cutt. healthy and firm. Not the biggest for sure, but still beats those planter lakes any day. James switched to my setup, and very soon after boated a nice Kokanee of 13.5 inch. Yes... Kokanee until they're 15" in Lake WA. after 15" the state calls them Sockeye and back in the lake they go. I was pretty certain that it was a koke since I've been catching them elsewhere a lot lately..... if from the pic. you identify it as a Silver... I will feel badly, but there are certainly Kokes in lake WA.
We fished around the S. end of Mercer for these fish... then headed all they up to N. side of 520 in my 14' Lund. That means 25 min. boat ride each way. James had one hard hit on the N. side of the bridge (same Ace HIght fly hootchie-green) did not come out of the clip.

3 other boats, no fish that we heard of from at least one boat.

Yes that would be a Lake wa. kokanee Quadfather a nice fat one at that ! them are some real good fish to eat . Its nice to see some one is boating some fish out of that lake Thanks for the report!

Hey Quad.... that looks like a darn nice landlocked sockeye (Kokanee)!! LOL! Good catch. BTW, did you know that landlocked silvers and landlocked Sockeye can never universally be called Kokanee? LOL! Geez some people on these reports...... The term "Kokanee" gives us all good insight that we've caught a small landlocked version of the Seagoing salmonids. AMEN!

Great report! Very nice catch. Ive been reading about kokanee and its very interesting how they figured out that they only grow so big when they dont go to the ocean. Sockeye do get nice and big. Hopefully they get enough in this year and open up Lk WA. I was able to fish it back in 05-06 when they did open it last. Great fishery. Thats the only thing I have fished for and looks like I need to get down there for some cutts. Thanks fro the great detail.

Thanks for taking me out Quad, had a great time, we got REAL lucky with the weather obviously. Hopefully I'll get a chance to go out there again. Ate it that night, man it was good tasting, nice pink meat etc.
